8 big music events set for last half of April

If you think summer can’t get any hotter, think again.

An avalanche of concerts, festivals and music events are set to turn up temps all summer long.

And, whatever your musical pleasure, there’s an event suited for you.

In the last two weeks of April alone, 8 major music events have been set. Here’s what’s going down:


Free fun

On April 19, Friday, Earth Day Jam happens at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig (9th Avenue Corner 34th Street, near Market! Market!). Performers include Abra, Brownman Revival, Callalily, Kitchie Nadal, Kalayo, Lou Bonnevie, Mayonnaise, Moonstar 88, Ney, Nina, Reggae Mistress, Rivermaya, Rocksteddy, Sandwich, Save Me Hollywood, The Oktaves, and more. Starts at 6 p.m. Entrance is free.

All-day, all-in-one

The following day, April 20, the Visual Music Carnival 2, unfolds on the grounds of Coral Way open parking at the Mall of Asia Arena. Expect loads of activities including cosplay, games, extreme sports, contests, acrobats, trampoline and bungee jumping areas, a skateboard competition, a "zombiescape." Plus, there’s live music from Slapshock, Saydie, Philia, Valley of Chrome, The Chonkeys, Paramita, Candy Candy, Atthismo, Odat, Red Letter Blvd, Sushi Monster, Psycho Destroyer, Sucket Seven, Quatro, Voice of Tranquility, Disembodied Existence, Army of One. Starts at 12 noon. Entrance: P200.



Concert Review: A 3-something’s perspective on The Script


Getaways to the South 

Maybe you can immerse yourself in music and take a vacation at the same time. Then, block off April 26-28 for the Luna Musika Lawaig 2. The first of two music festivals happening in Mindanao under SPF 13: Summer Peace Festival 2013, Luna Musika kicks off in Ki Bathala Gardens in Talakag, Bukidnon (26 kilometers southeast of Cagayan de Oro City). It hosts a mix of local and international musical and visual artists. Activities include white water rafting, drumming, yoga, food fair, flow camp and traditional games. Tickets at P1000 for adults and P500 for children.

Then, from April 30 to May 1, the second SPF event Paz Musika del Mar is set at Paseo del Mar in Zamboanga City. It features some of the artists at the Luna Musika fest including Mushproject (Barcelona), Isa Tabasuares and Thomas Walter (Berlin), Fantuzzi (New York), Siri Svegler (Sweden), Kate Torralba (Cebu), Sinyma (Manila), Humanfolk (Manila),  Nanay Mo (Manila) and Steady Machine (Manila). Aside from music, the fest highlights food so expect chefs and local cooks presenting Zamboanga favorites. Tickets are P1,000 (P500 for Zamboanga residents).

Metal screamfest

Two more events—for two different audiences—are set on Saturday, April 27.

Metal fans are expected to gather at the Amoranto Stadium, Quezon City for the annual Pulp Summer Slam. The 13th edition, entitled Till Death Do Us Part, features the New York death metal band Cannibal Corpse, California metalcore group As I Lay Dying, the punk-progressive Coheed and Cambria from New York, Helsinki-based metalheads Amoral, the post-hardcore A Skylit Drive from California, and Circa Survive from California. Local acts Mr. Bones and The Boneyard Circus, Philia, Kamikazee, and ChicoSci are also set to perform. Gate opens at 12nn. Tickets at P414.

DJ sets and live bands

If club music is more your thing, then there’s the Close-up Summer Solstice 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds. The 12-hour party features world-renowned DJs Afrojack, Alex Gaudino, Apster, Cedric Gervais, Cobra Starship; club artist DEV; remix kings Jump Smokers; plus top bands Sandwich, Sponge Cola and Urbandub. Starts at 4 p.m. Ticket price is P500.

My, my, how can I resist you?

Moms, dads and Abba fans of all ages will get a kick out of Mamma Mia! It's Abbamania. Said to be the top Abba tribute group in Europe, Abbamania will perform on April 25, Thursday, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts World Manila in Pasay City. Starts at 7:30 p.m. Balcony tickets are P2,640.

Daniel Padilla's birthday concert

Meantime, fans of Daniel Padilla can get their scream on when the teen heartthrob mounts Daniel Live! The Daniel Padilla Birthday Concert  at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao on April 30, Tuesday. Starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are P265.
