Local celebs join 'gwiyomi' craze

Move over,  "Gangnam Style."  Here comes the new Internet craze  "Gwiyomi," which was first popularized in South Korea and is now making the rounds of various countries, including the Philippines.

According to Bangkok Post, gwiyomi is slang for cute person.

So who first popularized this Internet meme?

Public opinion is divided on who between (Born to Beat) BtoB member Jung Il Hoon or South Korean indie singer Hari who started the craze.

In "BtoB MTV Diary Many" last year, Jung Il Hoon did gwiyomi with various cute hand signs and facial expressions. It has gone viral and  spawned  several versions.

Last February, South Korean indie singer Hari released a digital single called "Gwiyomi."

Local celebrities like  Vice Ganda, Alodia Gosiengfiao, teen actress Ella Cruz and the hosts of "Umagang Kay Ganda" have latched on to the "Gwiyomi" craze.  

Vice Ganda introduced the craze and sampled the cutesy dance in the noontime show "It's Showtime" on April 4.

Even 2ne1 member Sandara Park got curious about Vice Ganda's version of gwiyomi. She tweeted the comedian,"Hi Vice! I wanna see your version of gwiyomi! Sobrang gwiyomi mo kasi, napanuod ko yung movie mo."

After getting many requests to do the gwiyomi, famous cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao uploaded her version online on April 4. As of writing, her video has over 1.4 million views.

Ella received many requests from her fans to do a gwiyomi video, which she did.  It now has over 200,000 views.

"Umagang Kay Ganda" hosts Atom Araullo, Bianca Gonzalez, Bernadette Sembrano, Anthony Taberna, Ariel Ureta and Winnie Cordero, loosened up on air pulled off the cute dance craze. Their video, which shows a cute, colorful backdrop to match the song, was aired on the morning show on Wednesday, April 10.
