Everything for Redheads: new beauty site caters specially for flame colored locks
A UK mother and daughter team frustrated with the lack of haircare products for redheads have set up an online shop specifically for ladies with flame-colored locks and pale skin.
The idea came one morning in 2011 when Jen Shailes and her daughter Jessica, finding yet another of their favorite products had been discontinued, became tired of trying to find a good shampoo to enhance their red hair.
Although celebrities such as Christina Hendricks and Emma Stone signal a revival of red locks in Hollywood, it is estimated that only 3 percent of the world's population has naturally red hair.
While well-known brands such as Schwarzkopf do cater for ginger tresses, in general there seems to be a lack of specially created products on the market.
But at Everything for Redheads -- which ships internationally -- hair products including shampoo, serum and conditioner for red hair are for sale.
"After doing some research we discovered that larger companies were discontinuing products because they couldn't make the volumes they were used to," explained the pair, whose research also revealed fellow redheads across the globe were feeling their pain.
And although things have been improving in recent years with specially designed products including Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts' Dainty Doll makeup line for porcelain complexions, cosmetics for fair-skinned ladies is also an issue.
Everything for Redheads also sells cosmetics, and there are even plans to branch into gifts, novelty items, and cater more to men.
The pair adds that women who dye their hair red are equally important to them.
"They have chosen to have that color and for many, it's not just about a different hair color, being a ‘Redhead' is an identity," they explain, adding that events such as the Roodharigendag gathering of red-haired people in the Netherlands help them embrace this.
"We're really looking forward to ‘Redhead Day' in Holland at the end of August, because we get an opportunity to celebrate being a redhead with others," they say.
There is also a Facebook site where fans can share tips on dealing with bullying, protecting fair skin against the risk of skin cancer, and fashion and beauty.
