Why watch 'The Baker King'?

One of Korea's top 2010 dramas, "The Baker King," is winning many Filipino hearts since it started airing on GMA-7. This is not a surprise because "The Baker King," also known as "Baker King Kim Tak Goo" or "Bread, Love and Dreams," garnered the top ratings position in both AGB Nielsen and TNS Media Korea during its run from June to September of last year.

This family saga has a total of 30 episodes which is considered longer than the usual Korean drama which averages about 16 episodes. The Philippine Facebook page for "The Baker King" has more than 50,000 fans to date and counting.

The fervor for "The Baker King" transcends dividing lines as evidenced by its diverse fan base which includes fans from different ages, social status, and cultural groups. The response to this drama is akin to the success of successful saga-like dramas such as "Marimar" and "Mula sa Puso."

But why should you watch "The Baker King"? Let me give you three spoiler-free reasons why "The Baker King" is worth your time. First, the story is full of strong values and life lessons which are useful to people from all walks of life. The “three tasks” that the master baker gives to the apprentice bakers are beautiful metaphors on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. The characters are also well crafted and through them one learns of how the perspectives and choices people make affects the outcome of their lives. It is no wonder that the writer of this drama, Kang Eunkyung, has won several awards for penning this instant classic. Second, the performances of the cast is nothing less than superb. Yoon Shi Yoon, the actor who played the title role of Kim Tak Goo, will surely impress anyone with his ability to balance action, comedy, and drama seamlessly. The other actors including the child actors also delivered superb performances. The third reason why you should watch this drama is the bread. The beauty shots of the baking and baked breads will surely make you want to continue watching the drama. You will grow to appreciate the artisan life led by professional bakers and you'll probably get a sudden craving for bread. I strongly recommend you have some bread around when you watch this drama.
