7 top ‘Gangnam Style’ moments

I recently wrote a post entitled "World goes crazy over PSY's 'Gangnam Style'" and it seems the response has not died down. Since then, the video has become a certified viral phenomenon with over 100 million views to date and counting!

PSY, the rapper-singer behind the addictive song, has reaped the benefits of his success by having Justin Bieber himself say that he is not worth being compared to PSY. The rapper has since signed on to Bieber's label, Island Records, for worldwide representation—a sure sign that the world is just waiting to be totally PSY'ched!

What makes "Gangnam Style" so hot? The tongue-in-cheek irreverence of the video coupled with the hook-laden novelty of the track seems engineered to win over even the most cynical of persons.

Here are my unforgettable "Gangnam Style" moments.

The Funky Dancing Boy

In the opening salvo, PSY is lounging on the beach with a little boy prowling around like a boss. Suddenly, this mini-PSY bursts into dance moves that take the viewer completely by surprise. The boy is Hwang Min Woo, a dancer who has appeared on shows like "Star King" and "Korea's Got Talent 2." Now hailed as "Little PSY," the boy two years ago was known by the moniker "Little Shindong" right after his Super Junior "Bonamana" dance. This kid dances with such gusto and attitude, he's well on his way to moving up in the entertainment world.

The Sauna

There is something oddly silly about the sauna scene, which shows PSY wrapped, female-style, in a towel, while a rather large man sits beside him and a thinner man stretches in front of the two of them. With the heavily tattooed man virtually showing off his thin frame and PSY appearing to doze off, I can only wonder: "Is this the kind of thing that goes on in a Korean male sauna?!"

The Comfort Room Shot

PSY looked absolutely cool, rapping in extreme close-up. So when the camera zooms out to reveal the rapper sitting on the toilet, pants bunched around his ankles, looking all tough...well, words escape us. That moment was totally unexpected and totally awesome!

The Thrusting Elevator Man

Who can forget the epic part when an elevator's doors open to reveal PSY on the floor while a strange man in a cowboy hat thrusts his pelvis repeatedly at the camera in time to the music? That fellow is renowned comic Noh Hong Chul, whose irreverent "ahjussi" (middle-aged man) ways may be his claim to fame. I should be offended by his "lewd" dance...but how come I am not?

The Horse Dance

One of the things that has gone as viral as the video is the "horse dance," now being copied around the world. Choreographed by PSY himself, the hand and leg motions mimicking someone riding a horse, has become such a craze, YouTube is filled with hundreds of videos showing fans doing their own versions of the horse dance. Come on, admit it. You tried to do it, too!

The Yoo Jae Suk Dance Explosion

Korea's national MC, Yoo Jae Suk, makes such a memorable appearance in "Gangnam Style" that he almost steals the show. In the parking lot scene, Jae Suk slickly goes one-on-one against PSY himself, in a dance explosion that leaves all viewers in stunned silence or rolling on the floor laughing their pants off. Clad in brilliant neon yellow, all the way down to those crazy amazing Adidas shoes, Jae Suk gives PSY such a hilarious run for his money that the video simply wouldn't be the same without it.

Hyuna and the 'Gangnam Girls'

Let's face it, "Gangnam Style" just wouldn't be "Gangnam Style" if not for the "sexy ladies" featured in the video. In particular, the cameo of 4-minute lead dancer Hyuna, whose exposure in the video has resulted in a follow-up video, "Oppa, You're My Style," which has garnered 25 million views of its own. Both ladies, who strode alongside PSY in the first minute of the video, also endured having a variety of debris hurled at them including what looks like trash and snow. As the white stuff sticks to their bodies and even their lips, we laugh along with the models whose amusement at their own (mis)fortune is a harbinger of things to come.
