YouTube: 3 days' worth of video uploaded every minute

Seven years after it started as a video-sharing startup, YouTube has grown into a juggernaut where as many as three days' worth of videos are uploaded every minute.

In a blog post, the YouTube team said this a sign the site, which search giant Google acquired in 2006, is "growing up so fast!"

"Today, 72 hours of video are uploaded to the site every minute. Like many seven-year-olds around the world, we’re growing up so fast! In other words, every single minute you now upload three whole days worth of video instead of two.

That's 61 Royal Wedding Ceremonies, 841 Bad Romances, and 1,194 Nyan Cats," it said.

Only last year, it said the site had already established a record of sorts as it was accepting some 48 hours of video every minute.

It said what started as a handful of videos shared among friends has become a global platform delivering the next generation of channels to "anyone, anywhere, and on any device."

The YouTube team said the last year was especially big for it, as it helped bring more great channels to YouTube and redesigned the site.

"And all 800 million of you all over the world have shown us we’re on the right track by increasing subscriptions 50% and watching over 3 billion hours a month," it said.

The YouTube team, which started sharing videos in 2005 and was acquired by Google in 2006, said the site has evolved such that users are now the ones doing the sharing.

It said YouTube today features tens of millions of channels on YouTube featuring talented filmmakers, home videos, skateboarding tricks, music, and car enthusiasts.

"We’re so honored that you’ve used YouTube to share how-to tips, political moments, home videos, comedy, music, and so much more," it said. — TJD, GMA News
