'World's first' pizza museum to open this summer

After being certified by Guinness as having the largest collection of pizza-related items in the world last year, a merry band of pizza lovers are poised to open what they're calling the world's first pizza museum and restaurant in the US.

The creators of Pizza Brain, a 1,000-piece collection of pizza memorabilia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are planning to archive their souvenirs into a pizza shrine inside a 19th century storefront that will also double as a pizzeria. The museum is slated to open this summer.

Dreamed up by Brian Dwyer, the project is relying on crowd-sourced funds on Kickstarter.com. So far, as of February 27, 92 people have pitched in about $4,700 -- about a third of their $15,000 goal.

According to food blog Seriouseats.com, pizzas will include classics like Margarita, and pepperoni, but will also riff on specialty flavors, with a pizza version of French onion soup -- caramelized onions, Gruyère, and thyme.

Other ideas being bandied about include a delivery service via skateboard and housing an arcade.

It's not the only museum dedicated to foodstuffs. Last year, Japan's Nissin Foods opened a cup noodle museum in the port city of Yokohama near Tokyo charting the history of the convenient, ready-to-eat snack.

There's also the Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia, dedicated to the Pez candy dispenser, in California, and the Bruges Chip Museum in Belgium is dedicated to all things French fries.
