Will 60k Pinoys really watch PSY's Manila ‘Gangnam Show’?

Will one megahit be enough to pack a concert?

Korean pop star PSY whose record-breaking dance track "Gangnam Style" has become the most viewed music video on YouTube (with close to 1 billion views)  is performing at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds on December 20, at 8 p.m.

Concert producer Joed Serrano of That's Ntertainment Productions expects from 40,000 to 60,000 to pack the open air venue.

But is that just wishful thinking considering PSY has had just one hit, no matter how phenomenal?

PSY the impersonator

Serrano, who is working with noted concert producer Ovation Productions as his camp's partner in ensuring state-of-the-art lights, sound, and stage design, noted that PSY as an entertainer goes beyond "Gangnam Style."

He is known for impersonating other popular artists, a la Michael V, Serrano said. He also branded PSY as the Korean version of the Filipino comedian.

But a star-studded guest list should also help.

Big name front acts

Fronting for PSY are a variety of stars not necessarily of the musical variety. Anne Curtis, Wally Bayola and Jose Manalo, Ate Gay, Pokwang, Pooh, K. Brosas, Vhong Navarro, and Ai-Ai delas Alas have been tapped to appear. Vice Ganda is also said to be part of the show, pending his official confirmed.

Serrano disclosed, "It is likely that we will ask for PSY to perform an extended version of 'Gangnam Style' or to repeat the song after doing his solo performance of it so that the Filipino guests can join him in doing the world-famous dance."

PSY was originally scheduled to play Manila in January 2013. However, the former “That's Entertainment” talent revealed that he and his partners felt that this year-end period is the perfect time to bring in PSY considering the song's heightened popularity. By next year, the PSY fad might start losing its tremendous appeal, Serrano admitted.

Tix from P5000 to P500+

Indeed, most Christmas parties this year are sure to feature a "Gangnam Style" theme or at least make use of the song in production numbers.
