Why Papa Jack doesn’t want to be called a celebrity

He has set the trend in dishing out humorous, brutally-frank pieces of advice in his radio love counseling program. The Facebook page for his show, Papa Jack’s True Love Conversation (TLC) has 6,836 likes.

But one of the last things Papa Jack (real name: John Gemperle) Yahoo! Philippines OMG’s Best Male Radio  DJ awardee would like to be known for is being a celebrity.

Interviewed on the Purple Carpet before the awards rites started at the at SM Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, July 6, the Love Radio DJ said, “Hindi ako makakakain ng fish ball sa kanto. Hindi ko na mae-enjoy mag-mall.”

The guy would like to keep his privacy, thank you. But he admitted to Yahoo! Philippines OMG! that the petite  lady and the little girl who stood beside  him on the purple carpet are his girlfriend and daughter,  respectively.

No expectations

He came to the venue not expecting anything.

“I am humbled to be nominated. I just want to attend,” he admitted. “Tatlong kanto lang ang layo ng bahay ko.”
He didn’t even have a formal coat to wear a few hours before the event started.

“Ti-next ko lang ang nagdadamit sa akin that I need a coat.”

This anything goes attitude, however, vanishes once Papa Jack is in the radio booth.  The DJ of seven years  takes his big responsibility to listeners seriously

“If you say harsh things to someone, it should be backed by details and reasons bakit mo sinabi yon,” he explains.

As part of their love story, Papa Jack has seen couples unite and break up. And he achieved this by being on the level with listeners who call him up in his  show. "True Love Conversations," which airs Monday to Friday at 9 p.m.

A friend, not a DJ

“When I’m on air, I’m not a DJ, I’m a friend,” he says.

But he admits that he calls a spade a spade.

“Prangka ako,” Papa Jack is not afraid to admit.

It is this frankness, this honesty that has endeared him to listeners through the years.
