Tears For Fears to Pinoy fans: ‘You really are special’

With their jampacked Manila show two years ago still fresh in people’s minds, Tears for Fears returned to Manila to play two sold-out crowds this weekend at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
 
The British New Wave duo was luckier than Smashing Pumpkins and Snow Patrol, two foreign acts who played a day apart from each other earlier that week. Both bands were forced to take the coliseum stage during the height of the monsoon that caused 80 percent of the metro to flood.
 
"You really are special," Orzabal told an audience that received them as warmly as the first time they were here.
 
Began with a bang

The concert began with a bang as the distinctive intro of the hit  "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" set the mood of the show. People were euphoric as the duo played a string of TFF hits including "Pale Shelter," "Break It Down Again", and "Head Over Heels."
 
They also performed “Change,” which was left out of their first concert. And decided to deliver "Mad World" in its original arrangement.
 
"I hope we're able to cheer you up," Smith told the crowd, in reference to the rains that inundated Manila last week.

Donated to flood relief

Tears For Fears also voluntarily donated proceeds from their souvenir shirts, sold at P1,000 each, to flood victims via the Philippine National Red Cross.
 
The band certainly gave its audience something to “let it all out.” In fact, at the end of the show, thousands in the Big Dome began singing the chorus to the duo’s hit, “Shout,” to call them back for an encore.
 
During Friday’s show, it was reported that Roland Orzabal told the audience about the time he ran into a guy in a supermarket who asked, “Are you the guy from Tears for Fears? What are you doing these days?” Orzabal replied, “Google Tears for Fears in Manila.”
 
As Curt Smith tweeted after Saturday’s show, “Thank you so much Manila - as they say in the UK, you're the dogs bollocks :) We love you & we'll be back!!”
