'Need for Speed' headed to the big screen

The video game series Need for Speed will soon have a cinematic spinoff, according to Variety. Video game publisher Electronic Arts has launched the preproduction phase and the Gatins brothers -- who co-wrote the script for Real Steel -- are in charge of adapting the game into a feature.

The series originated almost two decades ago, in 1994. Through changes in gaming trends and game systems over the years (from the 3DO to the 3DS), it has managed to stay true to its arcade gameplay by deliberately shunning the realism of titles like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport to focus on adding as much fun as possible to the outrageous races.

The game series once focused solely on illegal racing, but its back story recently got beefed up for Need for Speed: The Run (late 2011). An intricate plot emerged in which the gamer experiences the thrills of a skilled driver who must get from San Francisco to New York, dodging the cops and mafia members on his trail.

Need for Speed is just the latest example of Hollywood's newfound love for video game hits. Prince of Persia, Hitman, and Silent Hill paved the path for the silver screen, while Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, Dead Space and Bioshock are on the way.
