Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup thinks 2013 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Ariella ‘Ara’ Arida was misinterpreted when she talked about Latina beauties’ English-speaking skills.

DJ Mo Twister labeled Ariella’s remark that  “Latinas cannot even speak a sentence, right? I mean, a complete sentence in English” as offensive.

But Shamcey insists her beauty queen-friend meant no harm.

“I don't think she meant it that way. What she just said is that when you watch beauty pageants, even if they can speak English, like for example during my time, the top 5 can speak English, but they chose to answer in their native language. So what Ara was saying is that, she doesn't have to be fluent in English to be able to answer. It's the idea behind it.”

The pressure is on

Shamcey adds that the pressure is on for Ariella because the beauty queens before her brought home the crown for the country.  Megan Young and Mutya Datul were proclaimed Miss World and Miss Supranational, respectively.

“From experience, I know how it feels. People are rooting for her. Kumbaga parang wala ka nang pwedeng babaan sa first runner-up,” Shamcey said.

Before Ariella flew to Moscow, Shamcey gave her some tips on having a winning attitude.

“As long as you did your best, as long as you gave it your all, you trained hard, the Filipinos would appreciate that already. It doesn't matter if you win or not, pero siyempre you aim to win, pero whatever happens, you already made us proud because you've done your best, you represented the country and that's already a mark of a winner.”

Shamcey thinks Ariella is ready for the Miss Universe pageant.

“I saw her during her interview on YouTube and very confident na si Ara. Kasi before kinakabahan nga daw siya when she talks to people. Kasi she has this personality but it only comes out when she's with her friends. Sabi ko huwag niyang isipin iyon or what other people will say or comment. People will always say something about you. So you just have to be yourself, don’t think about what they’ll say, kasi kapag ganoon she’ll hold back.”

Dream project

Meanwhile, Shamcey is very excited about hosting the second season of “Interior Motives,” which she says is her dream project.  The show, which also features respected interior designers Ivy and Cynthia Almario (a.k.a. the Almario sisters), focuses on architecture and interior design.

Shamcey admits she feels pressured because people expect her to know a lot about architecture (she graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines). So she reviewed reading materials about architecture.

“I was so happy to know that I got the project. I had to take out all my review materials, all my modules because when you don’t get to practice it that much anymore, you tend to forget some things. I also have to ask experts for help. Matagal na matagal ko nang pinapangarap na magkaroon ng show about interior design and architecture.”

“Interior Motives” premieres on November 7 at the Lifestyle Network.
