[Preview] ‘Five Million Dollar Man’ is All About the Laughs and Humor

No one thought this film would be this funny - but Five Million Dollar Man is a really funny film.

The film didn’t gather much anticipation partly because Park Jin Young, who has almost no ticket power whatsoever as an actor, took on the title role, and this belittled this film in the eyes of critics and the public. They probably doubted how good Park Jin Young could be at acting.

The film, however, is actually unexpectedly entertaining, and Park Jin Young isn’t the reason.

Big supporting actors including Jo Sung Ha, Jo Hui Bong and Oh Jung Se help the film get its humor together, and skilled actors such as Chung Sung Hwa, Lee Kyeong Yeong and Cho Jin Woong appear as cameos to lighten the mood.

Five Million Dollar Man isn’t a one man show put on by Park Jin Young; it’s a parade of well-knit humor. That’s what makes this film all the more worthwhile.

The story starts when the head of a department in a prominent company, Choi Young In (Park Jin Young) is asked by Han Sang Moo (Jo Sung Ha) to move 5 million dollars of lobbyist funds.

Young In, however, learns of Han Sang Moo’s scheme while delivering the money, and runs away with it. He is joined by the college student Mi Ri (Min Hyo Rin) and the two set off on a humorous chase.

The plot is fairly simple, but the humor is overwhelming. Most importantly, Park Jin Young is funny. He had slowly been inching farther away from the public as an unapproachable figure — the head of JYP Entertainment, one of the biggest agencies in the business — but in this film, he crashes back down to earth by ruining his image.

Actually, Park Jin Young doesn’t really do anything, but his character itself is hilarious. Choi Young In graduated from a prominent university overseas and always wraps himself in designer brand labels, but one big factor about him makes his life hard for him: his looks.

When the police try to look up his identity, they become confused on whether he’s really Korean, and when he walks the streets disheveled, a store owner who sells snacks pities him, saying, “You seem to be having a really hard time in a country that you weren’t born in.”

When the police put Young In on the wanted list, they say that he “seems to be a foreign worker.” It’s a kind of humor that uses Park Jin Young’s looks well, and it′s something that only Park Jin Young can pull off.

Park Jin Young could’ve taken the more serious path and started to carry more weight as a talented producer, composer and singer, but in this film he throws in everything he has so that he can ruin his image.

Park Jin Young showed while shooting this film that he was sad he wasn’t as close to the public anymore, and said, “I want to be an everlasting clown that makes the public cry and laugh with him.”

This film shows just what Park Jin Young meant by that.

Jo Sung Ha’s serious humor adds to the mood of the film. Jo Sung Ha is known for taking on the more serious roles in his pieces, and he’s never been in a comedy film before. His first comedy film exceeds expectations. Jo Sung ha is actually funny because he’s always so serious from beginning to end.

There’s no need to say much about Jo Hui Bong and Oh Jung Se. The two gang members always end up losing Young In after they start bickering between themselves. There’s a reason why these two are called the perfect supporting actors.

Cho Jin Woong is also known for starring in the more serious roles for his pieces, and his appearance as a cameo near the beginning of the film delights viewers. Chung Sung Hwa appears very briefly, but he still shows off all he’s got. Five Million Dollar Man makes up for its ticket’s worth just for its star supporting role cast.

The film is in the comedy genre, but there’s a bit of action here and there. It’s not, of course, those flashy and cool kinds of action, but it’s just enough to be enjoyable. Near the end the film turns into a road movie. Park Jin Young and Min Hyo Rin’s chase unfolds on the road they ride on with the dreams of all office workers.

Scriptwriter Cheon Seong Il of The Slave Hunters and 7th Grade Civil Servant wrote the script, while assistant director Kim Ik Ro made his director debut with this film.

If you just want to push all your other thoughts away and laugh out loud, this is the film for you. Five Million Dollar Man will premiere on July 19.
