Paulo Avelino on failed relationship: No regrets

Paulo Avelino doesn’t want to point fingers where his failed relationship with LJ Reyes is concerned.

“I couldn’t blame anyone pero sa amin, kung ano man ang naging problema o komplikasyon, I want to keep it to myself. May mga bagay na mahirap pag- usapan o i-share sa ibang tao. As much as possible, I want my private life private,” he said in an interview after the presscon of Regal Entertainment, Inc.’s “Status: It’s Complicated.”

No amount of prying from the showbiz press can make him open his mouth and talk of the hows and the whys of the break-up.

Is it true LJ felt bad because Paulo was not proud of their relationship? Paulo never openly talked about him and LJ since day one.

Quietly proud

“You can be proud of the relationship in a quiet way,” he replies. And he again invokes his right to privacy.

“Konting-konti na lang ang itinatago kong treasure sa buhay ko. Isa doon ang personal kong buhay.”

Oh yes, he didn’t let go that fast. In fact, Paulo insists he fought for the relationship.

“I tried to reconcile (with her).  Maybe kulang (ang effort). Maybe it’s not what she was looking for.  At the end of the day, when someone wants to be happy, you just need to let go.”

As a sign of letting go, Paulo insists he is happy to hear that a new guy is bent on pursuing LJ and would like to take his place in her heart.

“Everyone deserves to be happy,” Paulo explains.

He has no regrets having met and loved LJ.  And the communication lines between them are still open.

“We have a son. And we’re teaming up to make sure our son grows up okay. Sinusundo ko ang bata basta may oras ako.”

The other good thing is Paulo has learned a lesson he can apply to the next relationship that comes along.

“Hindi ko na gagawin uli ang pagkakamali ko noon.”

Again, Paulo is talking in general terms, afraid perhaps of being misunderstood or hurt again. You’ve got to give him the privacy he’s asking for.

Who knows -- when the wounds have finally healed, he will open up, ever so slowly. Meanwhile, Paulo’s lips are sealed.

“Status: It’s Complicated,” which opens in theaters nationwide on November 6, also stars Eugene Domingo, Jake Cuenca, Maja Salvador and Solenn Heussaff. Chris Martinez (“Ang Babae sa Septic Tank”) directs.
