Paula Deen teams with Novo Nordisk on diabetes

Celebrity chef and Food Network star Paula Deen is teaming with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch a program that aims to help people live with Type 2 diabetes and promote a Novo diabetes drug.

The program is called Diabetes in a New Light and offers tips on food preparation, stress management and working with doctors on a treatment plan. Recipes and tips can be found at http://www.Diabetesinanewlight.com.

Deen, a paid spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk, says she was diagnosed three years ago, but kept quiet about her condition until she had advice to offer the public.

"I wanted to bring something to the table when I came forward," she said Tuesday during an appearance on NBC's "Today" show. "I've always been one to think that I bring hope."

When asked if the high-fat, high-caloric recipes she champions can lead to diabetes, she hedged.

"That is part of the puzzle," she said, but mentioned other factors: genetics, lifestyle, stress and age.

"On my show I share with you all these yummy, fattening recipes, but I tell people, 'in moderation,'" she added. "I've always eaten in moderation."

Government doctors say that being overweight, over 45 and inactive increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Growth of the disease in the U.S. has been closely tied to escalating obesity rates. Roughly 23 million Americans are believed to have Type 2 diabetes, according to federal estimates.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. The body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it efficiently, allowing excess sugar, or glucose, to accumulate in the blood.

Deen has Type 2 diabetes and takes Victoza, a once-daily noninsulin injection. The website links to promotional materials for the drug.

The 64-year-old Deen, known as "the Queen of Southern cuisine," appears on Food Network.

Drug companies do not want us to get well...they would go out of business...
      • Merlin-8 4 months ago
Really. When's the last time they actually CURED anything? They are very good at treating symptoms but when it comes to a cure, well, that would cut into their insane profits.
      • Di 4 months ago
Hello...drug companies & drs are all in kahutes together. Look at all the billions of dollars or more that have been raised for Muscular Dystrophy or cancers of all kinds but is there a cure or anything like it? No because like Merlin-8 above said, if pharmacuticals gave a cure, they would stop making money off poor, ill people. Our whole country has been taken over by big government. We don't have a voice or a chance.

Paula Dean promoted the cause of the disease. anthony Bourdain is right, Paul and her lying family is the most dangerous people in America...creating the cause and sell the antidote?
    • Michelle  •  Washington, United States  •  3 months ago
Sorry if I offend anyone but I think Paula Dean is a big phony and will do anything to make a buck.
      She's a smoker too....just an aside.
I'm not a big Anthony Bordain fan but he's right on when it comes to her principles.
Hooray for Bobby, looks like he moved away and is so buff now and I'm sure Paula is just steaming at his new show. You go Bobby.

Dean has money to burn, I think the only way to redeam herself is to donate her profits from Smithfield and Novo to charity. Tom Colicchio recently made a comment with her association with Smithfield.....and it wasn't in a good way apparently Smithfield's practices with their animals are appauling with their cruelity to animal practices according to PETA and they have filed charges with them in the past. Dean is also a spokesman for Smithfield.

type 2 is the most common, but type 1 is always neglected and is much more difficult to control and dose not get the attenion it needs
      • Debbie 4 months ago
Thank you, Ken! As a type 1 diabetic, I get so sick of hearing people say it's all about food...some of us have the genetic type (for lack of a better term) and it's not our "fault." And I shout it from the rooftops: INSULIN IS NOT A CURE!!!
      • i 4 months ago
I'm a type 2 diabetic and I know several people with type 2 diabetes which most of us do because it is so common but I've also met one or two very young people (children) with type 1 diabetes and it was heartbreaking . I never knew how difficult it is to control and how immediatly serious type 1 really can be compared to type 2 ... one of them even got me into the walk for a cure thing they do every year (which wasn't bad for me either lol) . I agree with Debbie, insulin is not a cure, there is no cure for type 1 (or type 2 for that matter) but diet control and excersice does have a really huge effect in type 2 for many people ... we need to focus on a cure for what we can't prevent and that would be type 1 diabetes . ohhhhh and as far as paula dean, if she makes it, don't eat it, don't eat anything in any way similar to it, don't even look at it and you'll be ahead of the game on many levels .

I agree my son was diagnosed insulin dependant when he was 4yrs old.....he's now 15 & sometimes it's a nightmare!! it's a constant worry & IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU GROW OUT OFF!!! no one in my family, or his father's family have any history of dibeties..."it's just one of those things" so they told me...i wish they would find a cure for type one,it's heartbreaking seeing how many kids turn up to diabetic clinic! :(

Does it bother anybody else that the title of this article is " Paula Deen Teams Up with Novo Nordisk?" She is getting paid to be a spokesperson. Unless she is doing this for free the title should be "Paula Deen is Hired by Novo Nordisk to promote their Drugs."
      • Robert 4 months ago
...and then, what is the point of the article? This whole situation just makes me ill.
      • i 4 months ago
that woman never does anything for free ... you can bet Novo Nordisk has her on the payroll one way or another ... but hey, if you discount diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer along with obesity her cooking isn't bad if you like to eat deep fried trans fat with sugar on it .
      • sliver moon 4 months ago
What a fat fugly two faced hypocrite. She got rich and famous for her artery clogging food, now she's a rep for a pharmaceutical company advising us on how to eat healthy?? Does anyone else have a problem with this? Seems she's an attention ho, wishy washy, whichever way the winds blow.

You would think she would promote a diabetic friendly cooking style on her show rather than the fat and sugar laden stuff she prepares.
      • jesangel 4 months ago
she looks like she eats in moderation HAHAHA

Wish my 13 year old can just take a pill or be able to control her diababties with exercise and diet, she has type 1 and it will never go away =( she is 5'3 89 pounds and checks her sugar 6 times a day and shots twice a day. wish ,more people would talk about type 1.
      • Apeface 4 months ago
They're all talking about type 2 because they think Deen and others with t2 did it to themselves with bad diet. Type 1s get off the hook on that score.

My 13-year-old grandson has Type I diabetes. We discovered it when he was 9. He's not a very healthy little boy unfortunately. He does have an insulin pump, but the site has to be changed regularly. The cruelty of his "classmates" is beyond comprehension though.
      • Charles 4 months ago
Fire2Ice: ask your doctor to go to his classroom and give a talk on diabetes. That would help him and his classmates understand exactly what the disease is. It's a thought anyway. I agree, kids can be horribly cruel but usually, as with adult, it's based out of ignorance.

She was diagnosed 3 years ago and is just now making the announcement. Now she is going to sell drugs. It's all about the money, Paula.
    • Angie  •  4 months ago
I like Paula but she needs to loose weight, and eat healthy food. Her Husband is huge and he won't last long with the food she feeds him. She fries bacon in a fryer. What do you expect?

As someone who lives daily with T2 diabetes, I appreciate the struggle someone in the public eye, esp. someone who makes her living by cooking, would have "coming out" publically with diabetes, and hopefully she'll be able to reach people who might not be reached otherwise. Having diabetes is hard, it's a life sentence, and just because someone is fat, doesn't mean they "deserve" diabetes. While being overweight is likely a cause of diabetes, it's not the ONLY cause, or every overweight individual would have it. Show some compassion people. Imagine waking up every day knowing you have diabetes, wondering at what point you will start having kidney issues or eye issues, worrying everytime you get a cut that it might become infected, ultimately causing an amputation. So what if someone let themselves become overweight, they don't automatically deserve diabetes anymore than someone who lies out in the sun deserves skin cancer or someone who smokes deserves lung cancer. Don't judge until you've walked in someone elses shoes.

While a crappy diet can contribute to T2 diabetes, it is also genetics! My family has been ravaged with diabetes(and deaths from diabetes comp), most are NOT obese, but some are. So before you all start spewing about a disease most of you do not have, I suggest you educate yourselves first. Knowledge is power!!

Why didn't she say something 3 years ago when she found out she had Type2?
Oh that's right she didn't have a deal with a drug maker.
    • Shelly  •  Columbus, United States  •  4 months ago
She only came out to the public about it after she made her deal with pharmaceutical co. Sounds like bad Karma to me.
    • thinkerone  •  4 months ago
so...for 3 years, this has been kept secret until she could make money off it by being a spokesperson? And in this time, she has failed to use her incredible celebrity and the love her fans have for her to promote healthy eating, exercise, and ways to cook that are good for the folks who follow her? I am disappointed. "Moderation" for the butter and pork fat soaked recipes she promotes would be very, very, very rare meals, just ask Dr. Oz.

What a load of crap! 3 years!!! She has had it for 3 years!! As she went on preparing those foods for the masses to imitate, she knew she had eaten herself into diabetes. Not a moral person. Money grubbing. Sick!!

      SHE LOST MY RESPECT!!!!!!!
    • S.  •  Portage, United States  •  4 months ago
Victoza didn't work for me at all, and it's hugely expensive....on medicare's prescription plan, you're only covered for a certain amount....and then they only pay half, when that's done....which MY half was $600!!! Yes...the stuff is like $1200 (and as I said, doesn't always work) Apparently, it's all about money for Paula D. ...Shame on her! I already knew she had Type II.....between her "diet" and the way she looked, it was obvious. But for her to go three years without saying anything to her fans and at the same time, continue to pass on her recipes that aren't normally as healthy for a diabetic (even if eaten in moderation), is inexcusable.....her son has the better idea....taking her mother's recipes and making them healthier....however, I think what angers me the most is that she obviously didn't let the rest of us know until she had solidly made a money making "deal" with a drug company....money is more important to her than the health of her fans. Well, personally, although I like her recipes, I can't stand to listen to her talk and behave on tv...She puts on her accent more than she really has, and her grammar is horrible and you have to wonder if that isn't "put on" a bit as well....she not only represents her family but she also represents the South, and Southern women....and sadly, she gives others the impression that all Southern women are loud, have poor grammar, says "Y'all" after every other word and flirts and comes on to every man who's in the room (and spouting out sexual inuendos every other sentence). For anyone who is reading this, Southern women are NOT typically like this, but are educated, and speak and behave in an educated and refined manner...however, they do know how to have fun, but in a classier way. It's sad that she's worked so hard to build her little empire, only to allow greed to be its downfall...I have a feeling that a lot of her fans are going to be very unhappy with her and she'll lose a chunk of her following.

Shame on you, Paula! Shame on your sons. You've destroyed all the credibility you or your family may have had. Are the drugs you're going to push be made in China like your merchandise? I'm done with the Deens and Food Network!
