Only on OMG! - PBB big winner James Reid prefers music to acting

"Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash of 2010" big winner James Reid

If James Reid were to choose between acting and singing, he’ll choose the latter anytime.

The big winner of “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB): Teen Clash of 2010” and Viva Records’ latest contract artist said, “For me, music is a lot more fun than acting. Artistically, it's more rewarding. You have more freedom.”

The 20-year-old feels it’s high time the local music scene gets a boost, as some artists his age take the more lucrative path to acting.

“I feel like there’s a big gap in the music industry in the Philippines. They have so far to come. Whereas acting, there you have lots of talents. I feel like there’s more development in music scene.”

While he conceded that his Tagalog speaking skills is still a work in progress, he still wants to join other artists in their bid to push OPM (original Pilipino music) in the foreign-centric local music industry.

“I hope in the future OPM becomes stronger because there's so much talent in the Philippines. There are great writers.”

Dream come true for fans

Apart from his charms, James won viewers and housemates over because of his singing talent.

“I never used to sing until PBB and then I was kind of forced to do it every day and I liked it.”

He adds, “It's been three years and they've always asked me to make an album on my own. So I'm sure a lot of them are really glad that it's finally coming,” referring to fans who have been anticipating his debut album.

James gave his album a personal touch by including two of his RNB compositions. He also sang an original Tagalog song, "Alam Niya Ba?"

His solo album also comes with two covers: “Rock with You” by Michael Jackson and “Loving Arms” by Dobie Gray, an old country song his father personally likes.

Though record labels face tough times in selling physical copies of their albums, the up-and-coming recording artist doesn’t feel any pressure when his album gets out in the market. But he conceded that his producer may think differently.

“Being physically sold, not so much. I'm just glad that it's out. I just wanted to be heard.”

James adds that he’s open to collaborating with girlfriend of two years and local YouTube celebrity, Ericka Villongco.
