News of the World shutting down amid scandal

LONDON (AP) — News International's James Murdoch says he's satisfied that embattled executive Rebekah Brooks had no knowledge of phone hacking while she was editor of the scandal-ridden News of the World.

His comments came just hours after the Murdoch media empire unexpectedly jettisoned the News of the World on Thursday, the best-selling tabloid at the center of the phone hacking scandal.

The tabloid, long known for its dubious undercover reporting techniques, had gravely offended the British public by hacking into the cell phone voicemail of a missing teenage girl, possibly even interfering with the police investigation into her murder.

But Murdoch expressed confidence in Brooks' leadership during an interview broadcast on British media.

All yellow journalism outlets should be shut down. Almost every thing they do is sleazy, or completely untrue.

I'm sure it's that way in North Korea. Freedom of speech is protected. Sleazy is not illegal. People buy it. Say no to censorship.

Not true Edwin. How about the National Enquirer reporting on the John Edwards affair that helped take down a sleazeball politician. I agree with most people that these tabloids mostly seek to make headlines and tread very fine line between journalism and out and out libe,l but they do perform a service that is protected by the constitution. There have been several times that these tabloids have beat all other news outlets to the punch on breaking news because they use sources that other papers won't approach.

Not impressed. It'll just come back under some new name, and those ambulance-chasing parasites will still be around.

The reason papers like this exist is because of supply and demand. Three million people every week were purchasing their sleaze because that's what they want. Many of the same people who criticise their tactics are the same ones who purchased their paper. Yes, they'll return under another name. Dirt sells.

God made dirt, and apparently it hurts.

News of the World involved in a scandal? Say it ain't so!

It's can't be closed down fast enough. The perpetrators should be prosecuted. There is no excuse. And, they have accomplices... those mental midgets who bought the taboid. You share the responsibility by funding the atrocities.

I've worked for the Murdoch's and frankly he more than likely had no idea of what was going on.
Murdoch is an old time business man, in that he trusts that the people that work for him actually do work for him and he chooses not to be a micromanager.
The people that should go to jail are the people that actually broke the law.
What I do blame in this is the rich/wealthy aristocracy that only wants to hire "who they know" rather than hire people that actually do know what they are doing.

One thing I would like to see is a news agency that delivers the news without bias one way or another and tells the whole story, not sound bites or editorializing.

They used to before the 24 hour news cycle came into being. Now they have to fill the extra hours, and they usually fill it with opinion shows (Glenn Beck, Rachel Maddow, etc) or celebrity scandal.

      • golly 10 months ago
npr is good sometimes but they still do it on some articles

"James Murdoch, Rupert's son, said if the allegations were true, "it was inhuman and has no place in our company."

      What a lying POS.

James Murdoch is the official Goebbels-like apologist for News Corp. Lachlan told his father to GFY.

Just another business decision for Rupert Murdoch.

Between this and the giant loss News Corp took on MySpace, I'd say it has been a lousy week for the Murdochs.

Come on, England. Don't wimp out. Issue arrest criminal warrants and ruinous fines on Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. Do the world a favor!!!

Good! One rag down....onward and upward until we rid the world of creepy, unethical, and biased journalists!!! Can't happen to all of them soon enough.

People eally should stop callign this a news paper...... it's toilet paper with words on it. Use teh wrod tabloid..... that's what the article did, they never call it a newspaper, casue there's no news in it.
    • abe_froman  •  10 months ago
That's good, but it doesn't address the issues of what happened while it was open. Hacking into anyone's phone, celebrity, missing murdered teen, or dead soldier is reprehensible, and the people who did it and authorized it should be punished in a court of criminal law.

How many of you guys think that what happened in England stayed in England? Do you think, It was only Murdoch's NEWS OF THE WORLD that was guilty of hacking into people's phones and paying off authorities to get information.

Do you think, people should be investigating Fox News, the Boston Globe, and the Wall Street Journal -- all owned by the Australian -- for illegal practices as well?

“Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power." Benito Mussolini

With the help of Fox, the GOP sure is trying to make Mussolini's dream a reality. But since the GOP's SCotUS majority ruled that corporations are people (but apparently don't have to pay taxes or abide by the same laws people do) I have any idea. Let's bring back child labor and allow illegal immigrants to take 'some' jobs from Americans.

      =
Texas: "...one [bill], proposed by Republican state Rep. Debbie Riddle, stands out.

...Those who hire unauthorized immigrants would be in violation of the law -- unless they are hiring a maid, a lawn caretaker or another houseworker."

      =
Maine State Sen. Debra Plowman (R) introduced a separate bill that would extend the number of hours employers can require a minor to work. Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) backs this proposal.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) delivered a lengthy lecture where he claimed that federal child labor laws violate the Constitution. His Republican colleagues in the Senate rewarded him with a seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee — the committee with jurisdiction over constitutional questions.

Missouri State Sen. Jane Cunningham (R) introduced a bill which would “eliminate the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed.”

It's sad that a 168-year old newspaper takes the fall, for the actions of a few unscrupulous, unethical, dishonest scumballs.

I wonder when FOX Noise is finally going to take a fall, after all the times they've been caught lying about crowd sizes & so on. After all, it's also a Murdoch-owned garbage pile.
