The new Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chair Atty. Toto Villareal wants to harness people power in helping him regulate what they see on TV and the movies.

In a get-together with the press last Monday, Dec. 10, Villareal cited various ways the common man can send their feedback to the Board.

“There’s Facebook and Twitter,” he points out.  The MTRCB’s officers, he adds, also visit the provinces almost every other week to explains what the different kinds of classifications, like  “G” (General Patronage), “PG” (Parental Guidance”), “SPG” (Strong Parental Guidance), etc., mean.

The MTRCB chief also said he is rushing the construction of the office’s website after it was hit by a virus.

Intelligent viewing

By empowering the people, Villareal wants to promote the culture of intelligent viewing in every barangay.

“Hindi yung tanggap na lang sila ng tanggap kung ano lang ang nakikita nila sa pelikula o telebisyon,” he explains.  Intelligent viewing, Villareal relates, will enable parents to decide whether or not what they see in TV and film is fit for their children to see.

Villareal says the open interaction should also apply to producers of TV shows and filmmakers.  His office created the  Best Practices Conference through which a  network can dialogue with the MTRCB and present ways it can improve its programs.

“Kapag may reklamo, we don’t adjudicate at once.  We respect the network.  Tulong na rin naman ito sa self-regulation.”

Help for typhoon victims

Villareal also aannounced that the MTRCB is doing its share in helping victims of Typhoon Pablo.

“Minabuti n gaming board members and staff  na mangalap ng mga kontribusyon para sa mga nabiktima, lalo na sa Mindanao at bahagi ng Visayas,” he said.
