Miley Cyrus has covered Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, dedicating her version to her brother.
The actress-and-singer found fame on Disney’s Hannah Montana television show, but has been trying to break free from her child star image.
The 18-year-old kicked off her Gypsy Heart Tour on Friday, with a concert in Ecuador. She seemed keen to prove she is less pop and more rock chick these days, choosing to cover one of grunge group Nirvana’s biggest hits. She dedicated the song to her little brother Braison, who she said she was already missing.
“It’s hard living on the road because you miss your family back home and this song is something I always sing with my little brother who can’t be with me here on tour,” she said. “So this song is also for him.”
The star added music is all about inspiration for her, and Nirvana are one of the bands she looks up to the most. She was thrilled to be able to do her own version of the 1991 track, which was caught on camera by one concertgoer and later posted on video sharing website YouTube.
“I have a lot of fans come up and tell me that I inspire them and make them want to follow their dreams,” she told the audience. “And so this one I want to be able to do the music that inspired me and made me want to be here on this stage tonight.”
The Gypsy Heart Tour will end in Australia in July.
