Michel Bras and Andoni Aduriz screen documentaries at Culinary Cinema in Berlin

French chef Michel Bras

Michelin-starred French chef Michel Bras is seen hovering anxiously over his son’s shoulder, as he frets over Sebastien’s decision to lay a yellow sauce on the plate in one way, rather than the other and criticizes the pair of leaves he’s chosen to garnish a fish dish.

Sebastien, for his part, is captured in a moment of anxiety, the worry lines on his forehead flexed as he seems to ponder the weight of taking over his father’s three-starred Laguiole restaurant, Bras.

These are some of the images in a preview video of Entre les Bras, or Step Up to the Plate, a new documentary that follows the celebrated French chef as he hands over the reigns of his restaurant to his son, who had worked for him for 15 years.

The film, by Paul Lacoste, premieres at the 6th annual Culinary Cinema at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Culinary Cinema runs February 12 -17.

Between shots of exquisitely plated dishes is a narrative that records the sometimes tumultuous dynamic of the father-son relationship, where a bastion of haute cuisine and a family name are at stake. Sebastien tries to quietly exert himself, while the elder Bras tries to ensure his legacy and mark on the restaurant will live on without him.

Another highly anticipated food film to premiere at the Culinary Cinema this year includes a documentary out of Spanish restaurant Mugaritz, which for the past three years has embarked on a project that aims to marry gastronomy with music.

Conceptualized by chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, a protegé of Ferran Adrià, Mugaritz B.S.O. follows musician Felipe Ugarte, known for playing an old, traditional Basque instrument made of wood and played with batons, the txalaparta, as he travels the world in search of the sounds that will help lay the soundtrack to Aduriz's gastronomic creations.

Entre les Bras screens at the Culinary Cinema February 14, while Mugaritz BSO premieres February 13.
