Maison Martin Margiela was made an official holder of the haute couture appellation on Tuesday.
The fashion house was awarded the honour by French fashion’s governing body, the Chambre Syndicale.
Also honoured was Alexis Mabille, which had been a guest member of the couture calendar previously.
Chosen fashion houses must show a certain amount of original models every season, created by a permanent designer.
The total number of fashion houses with haute couture appellation has now reached 14 and includes iconic brands such as Christian Dior and Chanel.
Giorgio Armani is one of five correspondent members, while Hervé Leroux is one of 11 guest members.
The good news for Maison Martin Margiela comes shortly after it was reported their high street collection for H&M had not been selling well.
According to the New York Post the slightly higher prices could be putting people off reaching for the collaboration pieces.
However, the Swedish chain countered the rumours about the line.
"[We are] very happy by customers’ positive response," a spokesperson for H&M insisted. "[Our] philosophy is to provide fashion for everyone at affordable prices. For Margiela, H&M offered this collection in larger volume."
