Lucy Liu apologizes for TV remark
American actress Lucy Liu regrets telling talk show host David Letterman last Oct. 11 that “... if I get really dark, I’ll start to look a little Filipino.”
“I am so sorry that my comment was taken out of context, as I would never insult another group or ethnicity,” the star of the defunct “Ally McBeal” and “Charlie’s Angels” told Hollywood-based entertainment journalist Ruben Nepales.
Some netizens have labeled Liu’s comment as racist, which she made in reply to host David Letterman’s query on whether she runs on a machine or does the running outdoors.
BB Gandanghari (@imBbGandanghari) tweets, "So Lucy Liu doesn’t run outside because she doesn’t want to get dark because she doesn’t want to look “a little Filipino.” what?!!!"
Others, however, didn’t take offense at Liu’s comments.
Gabriel Valenciano (@gabvalenciano) says, “What the heck is wrong with you Filipinos? Ya'll invest so much on skin whitening products and treatment yet judge Lucy Liu. Please grow up.”
