Lorna, Michael V recognized at Asian TV Awards

Lorna Tolentino was Highly Commended as Best Actress for her role in the GMA series “Pahiram ng Sandali” at the 17th Asian TV Awards (ATA) ceremony held on Thursday (December 5) at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore.

The Kapuso actress lost to Taiwan’s Jade Chou (“Falling”). Four other Asian actresses were also nominated in the category, including Lorna’s fellow Kapuso Marian Rivera (“Temptation of Wife”).

The Highly Commended honor is given to the second best among the nominees in the said category. The winner takes home the trophy; while the Highly Commended honoree receives a certificate.

Michael V was also Highly Commended as Best Comedy Performance by an Actor for “Bubble Gang”—losing to Singapore’s Chua En Lai. To date, the comedian-TV host has won three Asian TV Awards for Best Actor in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Meanwhile, “Saksi” (anchored by Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales) was Highly Commended under Best News Programme for its entry “Typhoon Pablo’s Trail of Death.” Hong Kong’s News Magazine won in this category. Another GMA newscast, “24 Oras” (anchored by Mel Tiangco and Mike Enriquez) was also nominated.

“Reporter’s Notebook” (hosted by Jiggy Manicad and Maki Pulido) was nominated under the Best Current Affairs Programme category for its episode on “Bagyong Pablo.” “Born Impact” has been short listed under the Best Natural History or Wildlife Programme category for its episode “When Whales Strand.”

Kris Aquino was nominated for Best Entertainment Presenter/Host for her morning talk show “Kris TV”—but lost to Phanya Nirunkul of "Ching Roi Ching Larn Sunshing Day" from Thailand.

Singing reality show “The X Factor Philippines” competed in the Best Reality Show category. But it lost to China’s “Community Hero."

According to its website, since its launch in 1996, the ATA has been “Asian TV industry's most significant and celebrated event, recognizing excellence in programming, production and performance.”

The 13 nominations the Philippines received this year were among the 238 final entries from Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia.

An expert panel of 50 judges  across the region determined this year’s winners. The ATA recognizes broadcasters from free-to-air television, pay-TV networks and independent production houses across Asia.
