Kinsa smart thermometer gets FDA approval

A new smart thermometer called Kinsa has just made huge strides toward getting itself to market after a successful Indiegogo campaign last spring: the company has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is already taking preorders on its website.

The Kinsa not only wirelessly connects to your smartphone but its users can contribute to a real-time health map that tracks the spread of illness such as flu and strep throat. According to a report in Mobihealthnews last year, the app will supplement the data it generates with public third-party data, such as that from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, as well as other private sources.

Plus the company is hoping to incorporate other features, such as locating nearby urgent care facilities and featuring a one-touch nurse call button. Preorders are priced at $15.

Other thermometers that connect to your smartphone include Ovuline and Temperature Concepts, which helps women track their ovulation days, and Raiig, a skin-patch thermometer for diagnosing fever that has also received clearance from the FDA.
