Lawyer, educator, media spokesperson and now TV anchor Atty. Adel Tamano thinks politics may not be for him.
Says the host of ANC’s talk show, “Tamano Perspective,” “It’s not because I’m any better or they’re better than me, but hindi lang talaga ako bagay sa politics.”
He adds that he no longer plans to be a politician after losing in the senatorial race last year.
No media newbie
Tamano is no media newbie. He has been doing interviews and speaking in behalf of the opposition as its media spokesperson for three years.
But this is the first time Tamano is doing a full talk show of his own. He excited about it and hopes to do well as host.
“Bagay ba ko dito sa media, sa current affairs? We’ll see. But this is one career that I’m very excited about and I think that I might have some skills to bring to the table.”
A man of many hats, Tamano wants to give insights and perspectives from his experiences as lawyer, educator and media spokesman. He doesn’t want to compete with other journalists, but hopes instead to help people understand the news and assist them in having their own insights.
“I want to bring that to the table that I have that experience. I think there are already a lot of very good journalists and reporters much better than me, definitely. I wouldn’t even hope to compete with them. What I would bring is that experience of mine behind the scenes, and I hope with that, I can give additional insight.”
He hopes his show will encourage people to have their own opinion and take a stand on issues. “Filipinos sometimes are fence-sitters on issues. They don’t wanna take a stand. On the show, I want people to take a stand. That is the type of spirit you want to bring to the show. To be forthright, to be honest, and to take a stand on the issues,” Tamano said.
Also known as a celebrity lawyer because of his famous clients, Tamano wants to guest celebrities who have a lot to share with the public.
“It will really depend if they can have something to share. I want to interview and guest people who can help people understand the news. Not just because they are celebrities.”
Dream interviewees
Among those he wants to interview are Robin Padilla and Sharon Cuneta.
“Ako, honestly I would like to interview Robin Padilla, partly because pareho kaming Muslim. And I would like to give him the opportunity to share ang pagka-Muslim niya. I admire him because nadapa siya tapos tumayo siya ulit. That's what makes him a star for me," Tamano said.
In politics, Tamano wants to guest President Noynoy Aquino and former President Gloria Arroyo, although he thinks the latter will decline his invitation.
“This I think would make a good interview but she would never agree to come I think. But I'd like to interview (Gloria Macapagal Arroyo). I will ask her, 'Bakit ka nag-sorry? Nag-sorry ka saan?'" Tamano said.
He also seems to be getting the hang of showbiz, as he gamely answers questions about celebrities. Will he join showbiz if he gets an offer?
“Hindi ako bagay doon. Ayoko nang makipagkompitensya kina Jericho Rosales, baka mahirapan pa sila.” Tamano joked.
On Vicki-Hayden engagement
What does he think of the recent engagement of his client, Vicki Belo, to Hayden Kho?
“My perspective is they’re old enough and I think everyone should be given a chance to be happy,” Tamano replied.
Aside from having his first talk show, Tamano is the first Muslim Filipino to have a talk show on Philippine TV. “These are really important to me, not personally. But I think it’s important for Filipino Muslims to see fellow Filipino Muslims succeeding. So that they will say, ‘I can do that also,’” Tamano said.
Tamano hopes that his accomplishment as a talk show host can inspire his fellow Filipino Muslims. Tamano said that he has accomplished a lot of firsts as a Filipino Muslim. He is the first Filipino Muslim to graduate from Harvard Law School and the first to be a president of a university in Metro Manila (Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila).
The "Tamano Perspective" debuts on Thursday, July 14, on ANC.
