On Monday, Munich's massive sports trade show event ISPO announced its best-of winners for the most innovative new products of the year -- including aquatic-inspired skis, skateboard-inspired snowboard bindings, and a device that lets cyclists communicate with each other while pedaling at high speeds.
For the competition, a jury of professionals consisting of journalists, designers, retailers, and athletes from all over the globe selected top innovations from 260 entries -- 22 winners were announced earlier. On Monday, the top four overall winners from four different categories (action, outdoor, ski, and performance) were announced and awarded at a ceremony in Munich.
The awards were open to all sporting good brands, regardless of whether or not they showed at the event this year.
Overall winner, Action: Rotating bindings by NOW Snowboarding - This binding system based its design on the rotating axles of skateboards and integrated movable axles into the snowboard binding.
Overall winner, Outdoor: Cable Vario via ferrata set by Edelrid - For lightweight climbers, this system allows the adjustment of the braking resistance according to the climber's weight, which increases safety.
Overall winner, Ski: Ski D2 by Dupraz - Inspired by aquatic fins, this trendy new ski design with its wide-shaped front is geared for both powder and groomed runs.
Overall winner, Performance: HIOD One by Free2Move - This device makes conversations among cyclists possible, even if they are hundreds of meters apart from each other and cycling at high speeds. Cyclists can also connect their mobiles to the device to control calls, stream music, and display speed and distance.
ISPO is one of the biggest events in the world for sports goods manufacturers and suppliers. Over 2,000 exhibitors participated in 2012. A sister event happens in Beijing, February 22-25.
