New Year, new hair

A new hairstyle is one of the quickest and easiest ways to update your look. Not sure what to go for? A small change to your usual style can make a big difference. We spoke to the experts for some inspirational hair looks to start 2013 with a bang.

Embrace a 2013 colour trend

“Hair Veiling was spotted on the Spring/Summer 13 catwalks and it’s a great way to make a statement through colour," explains Jessica Speechly, Head of Colour at Errol Douglas Salon. “Veiling creates hidden panels of colour so that when the hair is flipped from side to the other it exposes contrasting colour. It’s a great New Year update - instant edge that’s also easily hidden.”

Mess it up

“For a quick update switch to wavy hair,” suggests Karis O’Brien, Creative Stylist at Errol Douglas salon. “I teach my clients how to master a messy ponytail where the texture and height is an instant transformer. For a sleeker, but equally speedy transformation, I recommend a loose fishtail plait. Very red carpet, but effortless. Both great looks for 2013.”

Frame yourself

“For an instant update, I use a technique I call Face Framing,” explains colourist Jade Blakely. “It’s a technique where subtle colours are literally painted on selected parts of the hair around the face to warm and attune with your face shape, tone and complexion. It’s what’s behind that indiscernible “you look really well” comment – subtle colour big impact.”

Twist it

“Hair twisted around a donut in a low bun creates the illusion of less volume and a larger wave,” says colourist Jasmin Allen. “It’s a trick I’ve taught clients who prefer the wave not the bouffant to make the statement. Finish the style with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine (I advise clients to walk into a mist of it) for red carpet high shine.”

And finally… remember it’s all about hair health and cut

“Above all else for 2012, invest in both your hair health and cut,” explains Errol Douglas, MBE. “Make sure you keep your hair in top condition with a treatment and weekly masque and embrace a trend by all means, but a high gloss healthy hair cut to suit your lifestyle and personality will never go out of fashion.”
