Google Glass to offer new point of view on NBA game

A new, interactive experience will be in store for fans at the Sacramento Kings vs. Indiana Pacers game on January 24. Several of the game's participants will wear Google Glass, allowing them to take footage of the event from an insider's perspective.

At different points during the game, team members on the sidelines, sports commentators and even cheerleaders will wear Google Glass. Players could also wear Google's famous device in the locker rooms or during warm-up, although they will definitely not bring them out onto the court during play.

Each wearer will record video footage of his or her field of vision using Google Glass. In this instance the device, known for its more advanced functions, simply serves as a wearable camcorder, somewhat like a miniature GoPro.

The event was organized in partnership with CrowdOptic, a company specializing in processing images and data transmitted from mobile terminals. The company plans to broadcast the footage from each Google Glass device to the big screen at the Sleep Train Arena, giving everyone in attendance an up close view of the events on the court. The experience could be repeated at another game before the end of the NBA regular season.

This isn't the first time the Sacramento Kings have been on the cutting edge of technology, as the team's ticketing office recently began accepting Bitcoin as a method of payment. Both of these initiatives can be traced back to the Kings' owner Vivek Ranadivé, who is also the founder and CEO of Tibco, a B2B software company.
