First look: Hanks and Berry in Wachowski's 'Cloud Atlas'

The Toronto International Film Festival will be screening the latest film, Cloud Atlas, by the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) as part of this year's line-up of films. On July 25, new production stills were released.

The sci-fi mystery stars an all-star cast: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, and Susan Sarandon, with some of the characters playing numerous roles, according to Collider.com.

This esoteric description of the film follows the exploration of how an individual's actions impact lives -- in the past, present and future. As one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries, it inspires a revolution.

The ambitious project spans across multiple eras with the cast playing different characters in each era, such as Halle Berry playing a Jewish woman in the 1930s and an old tribal woman. Grant told Collider.com he's portraying six incredibly evil characters.

The 2012 Toronto Film Festival runs from September 6-16. Cloud Atlas opens October 19 in Sweden, October 26 in North America, and in November in Russia, Germany and other European markets, then continuing to roll out worldwide.
