Euro 2012 on Twitter: skirmishes and slip-ups

Violence erupted between Russian and Polish supporters in the streets of Warsaw on Tuesday, inspiring a flurry of comments on Twitter, and French international Samir Nasri's "shut up" incident following the goal he scored against England has turned into popular Twitter fodder.

The outbreak of violence surrounding the Poland vs Russia clash in Group A left around 20 people injured and led to about 200 arrests. BBC correspondent Dan Roan ‏(@danroan), who was at the scene, posted the following comment on his Twitter feed: "Thanks to cameraman Stephen Adrain & producer Yo Haniewicz for some genuinely courageous work covering the skirmishes in Warsaw today."

Samir Nasri's "shut-up" incident, in which he muttered the comment while looking toward the benches and stands during England-France, is still causing a stir. Journalist Pascal Praud ‏(@PascalPraud) came up with the following analysis about what the French make of their player's rude reaction to the press: "The Nasri incident is divisive. People under 30 say: 'Enough already!' And those over 30 claim: 'Victory doesn't make everything OK.'" Journalist Pierre Ménès (‏@PierreMenes) would rather overlook the reaction to better focus on the player's performance on the pitch: "If Nasri celebrated his goal in such a bad way, it's because he scored one. And that's what's really important."

Eric Abidal, who was recently released from the hospital following a liver transplant he underwent in April, could be given the green light to join his pals from the French national team for their match against Sweden, according to Vincent Duluc (‏@vincentduluc): "Le Graet, during the morning press conference: 'if the doctors allow it, Éric Abidal will be with us in Kiev on the night of the third match.'"
