Epy on Dolphy: He will always be my king

“A lot of people hail him as the king, he just wants to be a jester,”  Dolphy’s son Epy Quizon said a few hours before the Comedy King died of multiple organ failure on Tuesday,  July 10.

“Siya, gusto niya lang magpatawa, eh,”  Epy told Yahoo! Philippnes OMG! and other members of the media at the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ first Sineng Pambansa press conference at the AIM Conference Center.

He went on, “My dad is a simple guy. He’s only true to the craft. And I guess because it lasted that many years—what, 65 years in the industry? Then probably that’s why people have grown up to see him and probably consider him the king.”

Epy shared that while they are grateful for all the awards  institutions have been granting his dad, the accolades are “the last things in our mind.”

True to his craft

“Para sa akin, he is what he is because he’s true to the craft. He did not do this for the awards, he did not do this for whatever, but he did this because it is his craft. His craft is to make people laugh; his craft is to sing to make people happy even if he’s not a singer, to dance, to entertain people. He’s an entertainer. He was born and bred to be an entertainer. Winning awards is the cherry on top of the icing.”

Epy, along with filmmakers and other actors, received their awards from the recently-concluded Sineng Pambansa in Davao where he was part of an ensemble of actors that won Best Actor honors.

Epy closed the short interview by saying that his father will always be a person he knows him to be, award or no award.

“He will always be my king,” he declared.
