Emmy Rossum: I trust my instincts

Emmy Rossum says her approach to life is to "go with my gut".

The actress-and-singer has carved out a successful career by trusting her instincts. Emmy has never allowed handlers to steer her decisions about which projects she pursues.

“I go with my gut,” Emmy told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Which generally serves me pretty well.”

The Shameless star began her career in the entertainment industry aged seven when she sang in the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus, sharing the stage with the likes of Luciano Pavarotti. From here she landed her first movie role aged 13 in indie film Songcatcher, which is when she started to assert her artistic integrity.

“I was a theatre geek who loved opera, and wasn’t into ’N Sync or the Backstreet Boys,” Emmy laughed. “But I owned my weirdness.”

As a confident teenager, Emmy went on to land high-profile movie roles in Mystic River, The Phantom of the Opera and The Day After Tomorrow. Her latest big screen offering sees her play a bad girl in Beautiful Creatures.

The 26-year-old brunette is set to release her album Sentimental Journey at the end of this month. Emmy says making the record was a labour of love, and she originally agreed to fund it herself.

“I thought, if I could make it by myself, there’d be only me to blame if it didn’t work out,” Emmy revealed.

The album is an eclectic mix of covers from the ‘20s to the ‘60s, which matches Emmy's personal tastes.

“I like opera and old-school music and that’s just kind of who I am,” Emmy finished. “People are gonna get it and that’s cool, or think I’m a freak, and that’s cool, too.”
