Duncan: Going solo means more creative freedom

If it’s true South Border is still without a lead vocalist, will its former frontman Duncan Ramos rejoin the band?

Like South Border vocalists Brix Feraris and Luke Mejares, Duncan left the band either to pursue a solo singing career or because they were unhappy. Duncan's reason was the latter.

Painful experience

According to him, he bolted from the group because of a feud among the members. It happened in 2007 when South Border was still in the US. They were there hoping to make it in the American music scene. It was a painful experience for Duncan.

“Matagal na hindi kami nag-uusap ni Jay Durias (South Border's keyboardist and band leader). Pero okay na ang lahat. Mahal na mahal ko yun kasi mentor ko yun. Mahusay na musician talaga,” said Duncan.

As to rejoining South Border, Duncan's achievements as a solo artist, his new management Backroom, Inc., his being a member of ASAP Sessionistas of the Sunday variety show “ASAP Rocks” and his recent award, the Best Male RnB Pop Artist of the Year from the 2011 Urban Music Awards are saying no.

Spreading his wings

He adds that Backroom Inc. is pushing him more as an individual artist. As solo singer, Duncan said he has more freedom to be creative and he can compose his own songs. He can also try and add other aspects of his artistry to complement his singing. He is now into breakdancing which he said will add spice to his live performances.

“I want to make a contribution to the local music industry with my songs. Iba rin kasi pag original songs. Mas naikukuwento mo ang gusto mo,” explains Duncan.

Duncan will showcase all he has become as solo artist in a repeat concert titled “Unleash the Knight” on December 3 at the Metro Bar, West Avenue, Quezon City. Joining him is his friend from ASAP Sessionistas Nina, his predecesor from South Border Luke Mejares, Prima Diva Billy and General Benjie Bellarmino Jr.

In the works for Duncan is his new album slated for a January or February 2012 release in the Philippines and other Asian countries.

“I'm just thankful for all the blessings and the opportunities to continue singing and entertaining people with my songs and performances,” says Duncan.
