Duchess of Cambridge may miss Christmas

Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton is unlikely to attend the British royal family Christmas celebrations this year.

Catherine – who is rumoured to be 11 weeks pregnant – left London's King Edward VII hospital last week after spending three days at the medical centre for acute morning sickness.

The royal family visits Queen Elizabeth II’s country estate in Norfolk annually, but the Duchess may be too ill to join them this month.

“It’s too early to say at the moment whether the Duchess will be at Sandringham at Christmas,” a source told British newspaper The Telegraph.

“Everyone hopes she will be feeling much better by then, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Duchess was being treated for Hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe nausea and vomiting and can lead to dehydration and weight loss.

Apparently this condition doesn’t ease until 17-18 weeks into term.

“The key to this condition is that a woman suffering with it shouldn’t be put under any pressure to do things like that,” representative of charity Pregnancy Sickness Support Caitlin Dean told the publication.

“Sandringham is an awfully long way to travel and doing things like that can trigger relapses, so there should be no expectation on her to attend. Why should she have to do that if it’s going to put her at risk of becoming unwell?

“She would be a long way from the hospital, so let’s get things in perspective; having a low-key quiet time is surely far more important than feeling you have to attend a big family Christmas.”
