Denise Richards opens up about having one of the “worst divorces” ever in her new memoir.
The actress has kids Sam, seven, and six-year-old Lola with her ex-husband Charlie Sheen. They wed in 2002 but she filed for divorce three years later with the split incredible acrimonious. Denise filed for a restraining order against Charlie claiming he made death threats against her and also accused him of being addicted to drugs and alcohol, while he claimed she was creating a “smear” campaign against him.
Denise’s memoir – as yet untitled - is out next month and she talks about the marriage and break-up in it. She hopes detailing her experiences will help other people, but is also keen for people to know she and Charlie were very much in love at one point.
“I went through a lot and I get asked a lot of questions about that time in my life so I figured that I would share my story and hopefully, anyone that is dealing with challenges will know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” she explained.
“[It’s show that divorce] is a struggle and we had one of the worst divorces so if we get into a good place, that’s great.”
Denise thinks her story will appeal to a lot of people who are going through the same things she did. In particular the falling apart of a relationship which meant everything to her, and her subsequent attempts to shield her kids from any nastiness.
“People have only gotten the rotten stuff so you know, there was a beautiful love story between he and I and I know that it went the way it went, but I talk more about how I felt during that time because I feel like a lot of women can relate to that, going through a divorce and custody and being a single parent and trying to work and all of that stuff,” she told the American edition of OK! magazine.
The star added at the moment she manages to keep a lot of what goes on secret from her children. Charlie has had a difficult few months, seeking rehab at home and being sacked from Two and a Half Men after making rude remarks about show bosses in public. His personal life has also been scrutinised as he’s been living with two women.
“They are in kindergarten and first grade so, so far they are okay, but I don’t know because that could change as kids get older and more aware,” she mused.
