It has been reported that renowned South Korean creative director, TV personality and stylist, Woo Jong Wan, has been found dead in his home.
Korean media reported yesterday that Woo Jong Wan committed suicide at around 7.40PM (KST) on September 15th, by hanging himself in his home.
The reports stated that Woo Jong Wan’s older sister had discovered him, and immediately called for an ambulance to send him to hospital for emergency treatment. But it was to no avail, as Woo Jong Hwan eventually succumbed to asphyxiation.
The actual cause of death is yet to be confirmed, with investigations still underway.
Woo Jong Wan left for overseas studies in France at the age of 23, where he studied design and marketing. After returning to Korea, he began a career as a creative director and TV personality. A creative director is a career that meshes designing and marketing together, and Woo Jong Wan was the first to hold that title in South Korea.
In 2010, Woo Jong Wan became a panel judge for cable channel, ON STYLE program ‘Supermodel Korea Season 1’, and he was also a host for STORY ON fashion trend program ‘TALK & CITY’ from 2009 to 2012. Thereafter, he also became a host for FASHION ON program ‘STYLE BATTLE ROYAL TOP CEO 3’. Woo Jong Wan also released a self-penned book last year, and it was well-received by fashionistas in Korea.
Many of his friends in the entertainment industry were shocked and deeply affected after learning of Woo Jong Wan’s death.
His best friend and actor Lee Jung Jae visited his wake on September 16th and has stayed there since; another good friend of his, actress Lee Hye Young also visited his wake. Gag stars such as Jung Sung Hee, Kim Hyo Jung, announcer Kang Soo Jung, make-up artist Lee Jung Min, and others in the fashion industry also simultaneously visited the wake, to show their respects to their departed friend.
In addition, stars also took to their Twitter to express their sorrows. TV star Jung Jun Ha who got to know Woo Jong Wan through MBC program ‘Infinity Challenge’ and fellow TV personality Hong Suk Chun talked of their pain at losing one of their best friends.
Gag man Lee Byung Jin wrote on his Twitter, “Woo Jong Wan, although I have never met him in person, but I feel that he is one who is able to make one feel happy after watching him appear on television… such a pity.”
Woo Jong Wan was involved in a hit-and-run accident last December, and was charged earlier this year in March, and given a 8 month suspended jail sentence on two years of probation. His sentencing also led to him quitting all his TV programs on hand temporarily.
His wake is currently held at SunchungHyangdae Hospital, and his funeral procession will take place on the morning of September 18th at 5AM (KST).
