“This is my first Diamond Award. I'm very happy, I would like to thank, of course Mr. Jose Mari Chan because this album inspires me to write Christmas songs. (I'm also thankful) to God, because somehow I can't believe this is really happening to me,” he adds.
And with the success Christian is getting nowadays, the star of the Pan-Asian series, “The Kitchen Musical” is even more determined to conquer the international scene.
“Few years ago, I was sad about it. Pero ngayon, parang narealize ko na maybe this is my path eh. I just gotta do it and embrace it to fulfill it,” Christian said during the awarding of his Diamond Recording Artist recognition held at Dunkin Donuts, Aurora Boulevard on Friday, December 2.
Conquering the Asian scene
Before filming “The Kitchen Musical” in Singapore, Christian starred in the Indonesian movie “Jaden’s Choir.” He recently launched his first international album, “Outbound,” featuring other Asian and international artists.
Does he plan to pursue more international projects?
“Yes, konti lang naman ang mabigyan ng ganitong opportunity. I have the venue and machinery to do it, my foot is already there, so might as well put my whole body to it,” he replies.
Christian admits there was a time when he turned down local projects to give way for other opportunities abroad because “priority namin ang international.”
The Philippines forever
But his plan to pursue an international career doesn’t mean Christian will abandon his career in the Philippines.
“Hindi ko iiwan ang Philippines. Gagawa pa rin ako ng albums dito. This would always be my homebase,” he vows.
Christian always acknowledges the support he gets from Filipino fans even though he’s already trying to make a name for himself overseas.
Learning from his mistakes
Christian admits feeling the pressure of living up to people’s expectations.“So much pressure. Nung nag gym ako ‘nun, tinira ako kaagad eh. Everything we do, there will be good or bad opinions,” he says.
The singer-actor shares that he makes it a point to learn from criticisms.
The singer earned negative reactions when he forgot the lyrics of the Philippine national anthem during the opening program of a boxing bout years ago. Even his shirtless billboard advertisement for a fitness gym received much criticism.
Still, Christian wants to become an inspiration and role model to others.
“I still want to be a good role model. It’s hard. There are things na I did bad, pero somehow I was able to cope with it. Like, national anthem and all that. It’s a part of life eh. You grow, you learn,” Christian muses.
While he’s waiting for news about the second season of “The Kitchen Musical”, Christian plans to stage a big concert next year.
“Beginning of January, we’re going to release a song with “a very beautiful girl.” I expect and plan a big, major concert next year. It’s about time, gusto ko na mag-show,” Christian reveals.
For now, Christian is spending more time with his family. The singer is grateful for the blessings he received in 2011.
“I have so many blessings. I am most grateful to God for giving me these things, sometimes deserved, sometimes undeserved, he replies.
