Gauguin and Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise

The only US stop of this exhibition featuring 50 paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Gauguin (1848-1903) and 60 examples of Polynesian sculpture, illustrating the painter's defining experience in the South Pacific and the exotic influence of its art and culture on his work. Organized by the Art Centre Basel, the show focuses on post-Impressionist artist Gauguin's Primitivism period with an emphasis on Polynesian arts.

60th Perth International Arts Festival

The Perth International Arts Festival is the longest-running multi-arts festival in the southern hemisphere. While attendance is lower than at NSW's iconic Sydney Festival, the Perth International Arts Festival offers a more varied program. The three-week-long festival features more than 1100 performances and boasts a diverse program of art, music, theater, dance, literature and film. Since 1953, the festival has welcomed some of the world’s greatest living artists and entertained more than 800,000 people. The opening of the festival will be a visual spectacular called "Place des Anges" by internationally renowned French company Les Studios de Cirque.

ARCOmadrid is a Spanish-based arts fair that aims to provide a truly global perspective on modern art and emerging creative expression. Around 150,000 visitors will travel to the festival to view cutting-edge contemporary works. Approximately 160 galleries from more than 30 countries will showcase works at the event. The Netherlands will be the guest country in 2012 and 14 Dutch galleries have been invited to the fair. The smaller Art Madrid art fair will run concurrently to ARCOmadrid. Tropfest is the world's largest short film festival. It offers young filmmakers a unique opportunity to showcase their works to a huge audience. The festival is open to anyone who wishes to enter and usually amasses around 700 entries each year. Tropfest is a free event held annually in Sydney. It is also broadcast live to venues in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth, attracting a national audience of around one million people. Since starting in Sydney, Tropfest has expanded to include international events in places such as London, New York and Toronto. For an additional fix of Australian cinema, the Melbourne International Film Festival is held annually in July.

The Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (AHAF) is an innovative art fair that transforms Asian hotels into galleries over the space of a weekend. The fair has been held in luxurious hotels in Hong Kong, Seoul and Japan. In 2012 over 3,000 artworks and installations from 60 galleries will take over hotel rooms at the Mandarin Oriental, with paintings sprawling across beds and sculptures erupting out of bathtubs. Hotel-based art fairs -- the likes of which include Aqua Art Miami, Trajector Art Fair (Brussels), Pool Art Fair (New York, Guadeloupe, Miami), and Young Art Taipei -- have sprung up in cities around the world as organizers seek to provide a fun and original way for viewers to experience contemporary artwork.

The show travels to San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in July and Walker Art Center of Minneapolis in November.

FotoFest is the largest and longest-running international photography festival in the US and rivals photo festivals such as Contact and PHotoEspaña on the global scale. The event features photography and mixed media exhibitions plus an international portfolio review for artists, symposia on photography, workshops, talks and the international Biennial Fine Print Auction. In 2010, 250,000 people attended the event. In 2012 the spotlight will be on Contemporary Russian photography from the late 1950s to today and five photography, video and multimedia exhibitions will showcase the work of contemporary Russian artists.

TEFAF (run by The European Fine Art Foundation) is the world's leading arts and antiques fair. Last year the fair attracted more than 73,000 visitors and displayed some 30,000 examples of stunning art and artifacts from across the globe. In 2012 more than 260 art and antiques dealers will travel to the fair from 18 countries as it celebrates its silver jubilee. The event is divided into nine sections that represent all the different forms of art and antiques from modern masterpieces to artifacts dating back 7,000 years. London's Olympia International Fine Art & Antiques Fair (June 7-17) is slightly smaller.
