Annabelle Rama may seem tough outside.  But no, she has her soft side.  And it shows, not only when she suffers with her children, as most moms do, but when she pities another mother – Inday Barretto.

The feisty Cebuana melts at the thought of a suffering Mommy Inday whose daughter, Gretchen Barretto has challenged her openly on Instagram and  told Philippine Entertainment Portal that "my mother is the person who is deeply pained by my happiness."

“Mother din ako. Nasasaktan ako para kay Mommy Inday.  Nasasaktan ako kapag binabasa ko ang mga nanyayari sa kanila. Hindi dapat ganon. Mahirap magpalaki ng bata. Ang panganganak nga lang mahirap na. Pwede kang mamatay. Kahit anong kasalanan niyan, nanay pa rin 'yan. Hindi magiging Inglesera si Gretchen (kung hindi sa  Mommy niya).”

The Gutierrez matriarch pointed out the difference between her family and the Barrettos.

Respect intact

“Kapag may problema, andon pa rin ang respeto. Ang away namin ni Ruffa (Gutierrez, hers and husband Eddie Gutierrez’s eldest child) hindi ganoon. Walang sumbatan. Walang tungkol sa pera.”

Ruffa explains that her mom only picks up a fight with her because of her love life. But in the end, everything is resolved.

“Hindi kami nagsisiraan sa pamilya. Si Ruffa, umiiyak na lang. Walang sinabing masama laban sa akin si Ruffa,” Annabelle chimes in.

Her children, she adds, respect her and Eddie, who have their respective sources of income and are therefore not dependent on their brood.

“Dapat may trabaho ang nanay at tatay para di anuhin ng anak. Kapag bigyan kami ng pera, thank you. Pero hindi kami umaasa sa kanila (referring to their children).”

At the presscon for their new reality show “It Takes Gutz to be a Gutierrez,” Eddie revealed that he was never idle for long periods of time.  In fact, he just came from the US, where he did a one-year show.

Annabelle continues to manage showbiz talents.

As the Gutierrez patriarch, Eddie says he is proud of his family because they’re not hiding anything from anyone.

“Kung ano ang kinikita namin, yon ang ginagastos namin.”

His ony daughter agrees.

“We’re  still standing strong battle despite whatever individual battles we’re going through.  We’re a solid family,” Ruffa adds.

The Gutierrezes,  will show how they have remained strong together when they air their reality show next year.  The family members,  who are also segment producers of the show, have a lot of control over what the viewers will see on screen.

Annabelle  has instructed the show’s director, Mike Carandang, not to edit anything.  She promised to show their life as it is, never mind if she doesn’t look her best when she wakes up.

Richard adds that the only off-limits parts are the “shower scenes” – or when any of them enters the bathroom.

A highlight of the two-part show is the family’s one-week stay in Bangkok, where they will be  free from distractions, like tapings, guestings and others, and can focus on bonding with each other.

“Happy ako na matutuloy na rin ang reality show.  Two years ago pa ito pinlano. Tuwang tuwa ako na mag-shoo-shooting kami ng sabay sabay at mag te-taping for the first time.  Excited lahat,” says Annabelle.

As Carandang observes, the Gutierrezes is a fine example of a strong family many people can take the cue  from.  Despite their differences,  and after the smoke has cleared, they’re still there, rooting for each other, making sure  each one is not alone in fighting his or her battles.

The newest family member, Richard’s girlfriend Sarah Lahbati should know this by now.

“Part of the family na si Sarah. Mabait naman siya.  Nagmamahalan sila ni Richard,” Annabelle reveals.
