Angel Locsin to fly again as Darna

Angel Locsin

Sixty six years after Darna’s very first flight—originally in comics—producers aren’t likely to retire the iconic superheroine just yet. Star Cinema, for instance, is keen in bringing Darna back to the sky with the modern version of the super heroine gracing the big screen in 2014.

Asked who gets the highly-coveted role, Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos briefly answered “Angel (Locsin)” in a sitdown interview with Manila Bulletin.

While the public may have lost count on the actors who played the role over the past six decades, one thing’s certain: Angel Locsin is set to reclaim the iconic role (this time in a film)—the character that made her super famous in 2005.

If plans push through, this development shall be one for the books for Angel as she becomes the first actress to play Darna on both TV and the movies.

Santos  related that Star Cinema is already exploring sci-fi for its line-up next year, similar to Hollywood’s decision to come up with “The Avengers” and other movies  heavy on effects.

“When we bought the Mars Ravelo stories, gusto namin isa-pelikula ang Darna kung sino si Darna sa panahon ngayon. Definitely, the effects will be different from the past Darna movies. Kasi if you will not showcase the different effects, sasabihin, ano ang binigay na bago?” Santos was quoted as saying.

The film outfit is now in talks with Reality Films to make this possible as the latter is more armed to meet sci-fi’s high demand for great animators and cutting-edge technology.

This may come as a breather for local moviegoers, as Star Cinema is known for comedy and romance.

KathNiel in 'Magic Temple' remake

Teen stars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, meanwhile, are set to star in the remake of ‘90s hit fantasy-adventure “Magic Temple” that originally starred Jason Salcedo, Junell Hernando, Marc Solis and Anna Larrucea.

“We’re also doing a remake of the “Magic Temple” with Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. Bagong special effects din ang gagawin. In fact, we’re thinking of doing a franchise of Magic Temple na limang pelikula. ‘Pag may may Magic Temple, magkakaroon ng “Magic City,” etc. So five stories na tuloy-tuloy,” Santos said.

She added, “The first draft of the script of Magic Temple already arrived. For Darna, we’re already done with the story of her past. We’re already brainstorming. We’re targeting next year for filming. So tuloy-tuloy na ‘yun.”
