Albert: Liezl battling cancer again

After surviving breast cancer last year, Albert Martinez revealed that his wife Liezl is again battling the big C.

Liezl was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2007 and was reported to be in remission late last year. In an interview with Charlene Gonzalez in “The Buzz,” Albert admitted Liezl’s breast cancer recurred.

“We experienced another setback na akala namin okay na. Nag-recur yung big letter C,” Albert said when asked how Liezl is doing now.

Albert shared that he felt devastated when he learned about his wife’s condition since they were already planning what they want to do once Liezl fully recovers.

“Again gumuho na naman ang mundo ko. Kasi for the past two years, akala ko okay na. So we’re having plans again of 'we want this, we want that, we’ll go here, we’ll go there.' And then all of a sudden, nangyari ulit iyon. Parang what’s going on? Parang nag-stop lahat. It’s harder the second time around to put the pieces together. Parang ito na ba iyon? Is there any hope?” Albert said.

His mother was also diagnosed with cancer years ago.

Keeping the faith

Did he ever question God?

“No. There’s a reason for everything, ang hindi ko lang maintindihan na why both of them. Iba pag mahal mo sa buhay ang tinamaan,” Albert replied.

He admits learning about his loved ones’ condition was the lowest point in his life, but he has to stay strong for his family.

“I have to put myself together and decide on what things to do. And as much as possible, not to show kung ano yung moments mo alone. Up to now, I still cry,” Albert shared.

He hopes Liezl will again survive this new battle. Albert shared that he and his family are praying harder for her full recovery, and for inner strength as well.

“I was hoping against hope and praying ten times harder and hoping that whatever we’re doing right now will lead to full recovery,” he said.

Staying strong for the family

Albert and Liezl have been married 26 years. He shared that his love for her never changed.

“I gave up a lot for my family. I will not do anything to destroy my family. Nothing changed. It’s just hard na yung plinano namin to grow old together na simple and all that, medyo na-derail ng konti. We just have to find ways around.”

Liezl sent a letter to Albert through “The Buzz,” where she thanked him for his love and support to her and their family. Albert broke into tears upon reading the letter. He told Liezl to be strong and that they they will face the challenges together.

She also gave him another wedding ring as a sign of her everlasting love.  Albert recalled the time he bought their first wedding ring in the US. The simple ring didn’t cost much.

“Whatever is happening right now, it’s just a bump on the road and we’re gonna fight it together. It’s going to be a group thing. You’re not alone. I’ll always be here,” he told Liezl on air.

Albert promised he will do everything he can for Liezl’s recovery.

“I’ll make sure that whatever’s available out there in the market that can help you, we will do that, because you are more important than anything else in the world,” Albert added.
