Actor-director Jose Mari Avellana dies of aneurysm

Theater and film director and actor Jose Mari Avellana died of aneurysm on Sunday, June 26, at the Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center. He was  70.

The son of two national artists, Lamberto Avellana for Film and Theater and Daisy Avellana for theater, Jose Mari did his last film,  “Colorum,” in  2009.  He was nominated Best Supporting Actor in the 2010 Gawad Urian for the said film.

Avellana also directed  and acted in the theater version of Nick Joaquin’s “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.”

Avellana’s body lies at Arlington Memorial Chapel along Araneta Avenue, Quezon City, and will be cremated on Monday afternoon, June 27. A Mass is set at 8 p.m. later Monday.  

The ashes will be brought to Sacred Heart Parish in San Antonio, Village, Makati on Thursday, June 30.
