A first for Sharon

A first for Sharon

For the first time in her 35 years in showbiz, Sharon Cuneta is finally doing a primetime teleserye via TV5’s “Madam Chairman” directed by Joel Lamangan and written by Joey Reyes.

“I’m just excited because this is my first ever teleserye. It had to take a collaboration between my two beloved directors to make me say yes to a teleserye, so I fell in love with it. (I’ve been offered) many times before. This is different eh,” Sharon told the press in a story conference on Monday, July 15.

Since a teleserye is different from other TV programs, Sharon has prepared herself in adjusting to the work schedule.

Work schedule

“My biggest fear would be my schedule. Thank God, direk Joel has a cutoff, and so do I. it will be like doing a movie with direk Joel, I guess. But it is a more regular schedule (taping is thrice a week). At least I know the days and I know when to schedule (time) with the kids. And I’m just very near. I’m not scared about the work because I’m really in love with the story.”

She shared that “Madam Chairman” is pegged as a “tawaserye” because it will blend comedy and drama. Sharon is deglamorized for the title role of a community leader and single mother of three who makes kakainin for a living.

“It has a running social commentary, but nothing hardcore. Because even I might get turned off myself. I don’t want my audiences to get turned off. It’s going to be very relevant and inspiring, but nothing hardcore. We wanted something na may saysay and may puso, that’s why we called it a tawaserye.”

Sharon hopes the audience will like the show.

“I’m really hoping na we will also get a good share, na our audiences will also give us a chance kasi we have the best people behind the teleserye. I will certainly do my best, so I hope they also give it a shot.”
Is she open to playing a barangay chairman, not only in the show, but in real life?

“I can make a difference without having to be in public office. I’m enjoying very much my position wherever it is now. My priority is really my children, my family. I’m not the type to announce also what I do, except if I know it’s to invite other people to help other causes. But I do my share. I’m a firm believer of what goes around, comes around,” Sharon replied.

Indie films

Like other mainstream celebrities, Sharon would like to do an independent film.

“Other indie filmmakers can also come to me and not worry about my sweldo. I’m very open to doing indie movies. I’d like to work with people who are passionate.”

Sharon is also working on a new project, where she would like to invite scriptwriters to send their stories for a movie she herself will star in.

“I want yung scripts like “Crying Ladies,” something like that. Something na you can do different roles. At this point in my career, I hope it doesn’t sound boastful, like Direk said, I don’t think I’ve anything to prove. I’m now able to experiment. Mamimili ako ng mananalo. May cash prize. Others will also be given a chance na kumita rin kapag nabili yung storya nila.”
