Today, I'm choosing to be proactive. There's an idea that's been bugging me for a long time now and it will hopefully give us a broader look at what Filipino musicians are up to nowadays.
From a roadtrip, let's go on a little sound trip...
The Mechanics:
Step #1
I will TAG 2 Filipino artists whose songs are on my PLAYLIST.
Step #2
I will feature those artists and add the map to their basic Web Profile (website, Twitter, Facebook fanpage, iTunes, you know the drill)
Step #3
The featured artists in turn will TAG 2 Filipino artists whose songs are in their respective PLAYLISTS.
Repeat Step 2 then 3 again and again and again...
It will look a little something like this:
Step X: I will also ask other people to start their own "branches" to add to the fun. You can also join later on, I'll update you on how to do so.

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Archipelago
Inspiration comes in different shapes and sizes. For some it's the rain, for most it's love, and for some it's music. Moments of inspiration usually stick to my mind. I was given a CD of Archipelago's "Travel Advisory" almost a year ago. The title track is part of my "Favorites" playlist. It was this song and Nyko Maca + Playground's 's version of Anak that got me started with this music project. I figured that if musicians could share their favorite songs from their favorite artists, then our vocabulary would be enriched. I really hope this project becomes one huge playlist map of artists promoting other artists.

I just barely missed Archipelago's show at the Esplanade here in Singapore last month (I came from work and I didn't realize how long it would take us to go through all the escalator ups and downs at the MRT!). It would've been the third time for me to see them, after catching their gigs at the Ateneo Bonfire last year and Ysab Yuzon's birthday gig at Route 196.
THE SONG: 'Travel Advisory'
"Travel Advisory" speaks of the common misconceptions of foreigners about the Islands. Listen to their RX Concert series performance in my friend DJ Fran's show (@monicafrancesca)
Every time I get the chance to convince someone to visit the beautiful beaches that we have, I feel a sense of pride. But every time I see our old airport, I kind of wonder why I invited them over in the first place. But I think the NAIA Terminal 1 can be fixed with an 80s party theme. (80s architecture, 80s music, airport personnel in shoulder pads and neon uniforms Hmmm. This is a different blog altogether.)
THE BAND:
@yanyuzon (vocals, guitar)
Back to the band, lead singer Yan is a theater actor from Tanghalang Ateneo. He also played Romeo from the Metropolitan theater guild's production Romeo and Juliet. He spent two years teaching for the Fine Arts Depeartment in the Ateneo de Manila University. He also plays guitar and sings backing vocals for Pupil. Back in 2008, he co-produced Sponge Cola's self-titled album. He's your basic singer/songwriter/teacher/theater actor/writer/producer/guitarist kinda guy. He is definitely in the running for a Zoolander Slashie award. You are warned, Actor/Model Fabio.
@liquidchad (vocals, bass guitar)
I don't really know much about bassist Chad Rialp but I did like the tracks of his two other bands . Take a quick detour to check out Sound and Liquid Jane.
wendell garcia (drums)
Wendell is all around huggable guy who doesn't fit the teddy bear package (read: tattoos). When he's playing drums, you can't take your eyes off of him especially when he starts shifting from one time signature to another. I am told that the unexpected changes are often unplanned and part of the band's storytelling. It's amazing how Yanni and Chad seamlessly follow this guy in times like that. Wendell also plays drums for Pupil and was once with Barbie's Cradle. He also lends his talent to solo artists like myself for album recordings (he played for my "Time For Letting Go" album) and concerts. I am definitely a fan!
THE AWARDS:
"MRI"
The band's debut single won a Silver award for Best Rock Song in Malaysia's Asia Voice Independent Music Awards (AVIMA) as well as a nomination Junk Magazine's Junksounds.
"Black Box"
The band walked away with a Myx Music Awards (MMA) Favorite Indie Artist trophy for this unique video made by 3 directors. It was co-directed by Marie Jamora from the Philippines, Ming Kai Leung from Hong Kong (then based in New York), and Anocha Suwichakornpong from Bangkok, Thailand. They filmed the video in three countries and sent hard drives of footage via courier...Wow!
MUSIC VIDEOS:
"Lumapit"
"Gaan" (shot in Thailand)
"May 1"
@anakarylle: @arch1pelago, tag! You're hit!
