Pacquiao sends wrong message in new game show

Manny Pacquiao (Mike Alquinto, NPPA Images)Manny Pacquiao (Mike Alquinto, NPPA Images)Manny Pacquiao: winner of 10 world boxing titles; Sarangani representative; movie (remember "Wapakman"?) and TV star (e.g. "Show Me Da Manny"); recording artist (his CD of Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch" ranked No. 19 in the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart). Now add to that long list of achievements, game show host.

Last Saturday, Pacman presided at the live premiere telecast on GMA-7 of his so-called game show, "Manny Many Prizes," at a jampacked AFP Auditorium in Quezon City. Game show is a misnomer because very few games were played. It was more of a Christmas party where Manny played Santa Claus or "ninong"  to more than a thousand lucky "inaanaks." That evening, he gave away more than a million pesos in cash and prizes. Take that, Willie Revillame!

To start with, each member of the audience did not go home empty-handed. "Walang uuwing luhaan." promised Santa Manny. No amount was mentioned however. The lucky ones chosen via a raffle earned as much as P30,000 each. Another group caught specially marked balloons from the ceiling entitling them to as much as P10,000 each.

    Misfired

One game misfired. Two giant boxing gloves were supposed to be passed from one audience member to the next while the music played and whoever had the glove when the music stopped won a prize.

Unfortunately, one person held on to the glove even when the music was still playing. It took a while to disengage the item from the person. When the music did stop, I saw about five people holding on to that blasted glove with no one letting go. The show had to cut to a commercial and the game was discontinued.

For the main event where the grand prize was a house and lot, the audience was asked to dance while Manny chose five who moved well. I was surprised when the champ picked a senior with a walking cane, who obviously could not dance as well as the others. The five had to answer questions about Manny's life to get a chance at the prize and what do you know? The old man won the right to play for the jackpot. He had to choose among five wooden houses where the winning phrase "Lupa at Bahay" was hidden. He chose No. 2 but the phrase was hidden in House No. 1. So the senior had to be happy with P30,000.

    Giveaway

But wait! Even if the old man had lost, Manny announced that he was still giving him the house and lot. What kind of a game show gives away the top prize worth almost a million pesos or more to a losing contestant? John Estrada and company don't do that on "Happy Yipee Yehey!" Willie Revillame does give away a few thousand to some losing participants on "Wiltime Bigtime" but a house and lot? Whew!

I don't know if the prizes really came from Manny's gold-lined pockets but he can certainly afford it. Forbes ranked him No. 6 among the world's highest paid athletes with earnings of $40 million in 2009. In our local currency, that's approximately P1.7 billion. That doesn't include the 2010 figures.

I appreciate Manny Pacquiao's honest intention to help the less fortunate members of our society by giving away cash and prizes but he and Revillame are sending the wrong signal. The message he is sending is that people should rely on luck and giveaways to improve their life. What we need are long-lasting rather than temporary solutions.

"Manny Many Prizes" already started it by focusing on two barangay groups who are involved in civic work in their respective communities. They were chosen not on the basis of a raffle but on their performance. They joined a "Simon Says" type of game with the winning group getting a projector and an individual getting not cash but a livelihood project worth P60,000. There should be more needy groups that the show can help.

In the future, the show is also accepting letters from the viewers who need financial and other forms of assistance. This is the way to do it. This is how foundations do it. Requests for assistance are evaluated before the aid is given. Giving away prizes via a raffle is non-productive.

The show should heed the advice of a Chinese proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Yep...he is definitely sending wrong message! He is a boxer and a congressman? Being a boxer maybe truly a long wait for the next fight which gives him time for nothing else to do, but for being a congressman? Something tells us the congress got nothing else to do at all? So many politicians manage to get the time to watch his fight? And now the fighter itself? How could this politicians get all the time to screw around which they are supposed to run our country? I know for so much problems in our country they are supposed to be busy navigating and solving problems. Dont get me wrong...I like manny! But as a boxer not a politician! Voters has been culturally lured by fame, money and very possible by fear! What a shame! We will never learn...

and who says Manny is not a good politician? are you from Sarangani?
      • China Made 10 months ago
Manny is not the lone congressman to take charge on building our nation, at least he is magnified, unlike others that can do secrets. He is a good Person so he is a good congressman too, far better than the others.
      • Junlie 10 months ago
tama, hindi magaling na politician si Manny but his a good person, d nyo lang alam kung paano cya tinulungan ang mga taga sarangani, mag boot man hinoon mo kung unsaon pag tabang ni manny ang mga tao? kayo anong na itulong nyo? pag hikod mo oi!
    • Chinitoeffect  •  10 months ago
nakalimutan na ba ni manny na isa syang politician? why not use his money to improve his area? alam nating mayaman si manny, but the thing is nakakalimutan na nya na may iba pa syang dapat asikasuhin.. like being a representative.. umaattend pa ba sya sa office nya? I know he is doing this to help.. pero i think he is helping in a wrong way...malapit kami sa TV5 and i can see people falling in line and even sleep in the street para lang makapasok sa show ni willie di malayong man----ari yun sa show ni manny. Manny, instead of doing that.. teach them how to start a good life.. like what you did to your life.. nagsikap ka para umangat ngayon parang lumalabas na umangat ka nga pero hinahatak mo naman pababa ang mga tao na dapat ay nagbabanat ng buto. para sa pamilya nila...think twice... baka ginagamit ka na lang ng mga tao sa paligid mo...
    • pokx2  •  10 months ago
ganyan din naman ang kalalabasan ng game show ni Manny. tulad din ng gameshow ni Willy. tinuturuan ang mga mahihirap na iasa ang kanilang pamumuhay sa game show kay sa magbanat ng buto.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." very much agree on this proverb.
    • stephen  •  10 months ago
I am sorry but I do have to comment. I know a lot about the show because of some sources and I tell you all that not a single cent is coming from Manny's pocket... All of the cash they give are coming from SPONSORS and the house and lot prices are coming from the giant multi-BILLION company of VILLAR... This is also true in Revillame's show. People are just too ignorant to let these people fool them. I know it is helping a lot of people but this is all just ADVERTISING and congratulations for a job well done, congratulations to all the networks who hide lots of facts about programs like these... An example for the things they hide is they do not really give the 100% of the price they are suppose to give... Not so big percentage goes to the winner... If you know some, I suggest you interview them... My oh my when are we all really gonna learn and wake up... We need a wake up call in order to help our country rise... This is just one of the examples that keeps Filipinos feet not on the ground but inside the ground...
    • robyl  •  10 months ago
Manny Pacman, you're only giving the money in a WRONG HANDS. It is better to spend thousands/millions of monny to people by putting up a TRAINING Ctrs.or a PANGKABUHAYAN Training Programs etc that the out of school youth or even parents who are jobless in every Barangay or communities in the entire Philippines can learn and apply what they have learned. Along with this Pangkabuhayan Training programs put up a cooperative society where people in that locality can manage. You will be more become popular even in the remote communities if you will implement this rather than in the TV programs. Your SHOW is only applicable to Metro Manila.

What is he doing hosting a game show!?!
Didn't he run for congress so he can serve the people?
As it is, he is delinquent as a congressman as he spends more time training, boxing, shooting commercials, appearing on shows, and all his other activities. Now he will spend even less time serving the people doing this ridiculous show!

And we wonder why our country is in bad shape, we vote incompetent people into government because they are popular and then we tolerate them wasting taxpayers money by spending time on TV shows, movies, commercials, and other rackets when they are paid to serve in their respective government positions.

And please stop calling him a hero. He isn't! A hero is one who sacrifices personal safety and security doing something that needs to be done for the sake of a greater good or for the sake of another. He doesn't do that. 1. Boxing for him is not a sacrifice. It is his passion. 2. Boxing is his choice, it is not something he needs to do. 3. He gets tons of money and fame from his boxing. It may be argued that he represents the Philippines when he does so but that is incidental, it is not primary. Money is his main priority (If anyone contests that, may I point out the issue a couple of years ago wherein he tried to break his contract with Solar TV and GMA because ABS CBN made him an offer. Solar TV and GMA were in good faith, did nothing wrong, yet he was trying to dump them because of a better offer while he was still in contract. Such a lack of integrity there.) To even suggest he is a national hero is an INSULT to the real heroes like Rizal, Bonifacio, or the thousands of soldiers who gave their lives and lost everything for the sake of the country.

Here we see someone who runs for congress "to serve" yet prioritizes his money making activities such as TV, commercials, shows, and even his boxing. If there was even some fragment of heroism in him he should have set all those aside and prioritized what he swore to do - to serve as a congressman!

Manny's intentions are noble but misapplied. Having lived in th US for 40 years and looking at avenues to help kamag-anaks and kababayans out of the hand-to-mouth existence, at most, monetary or any material aid is short-lived and temporary.. and it creates a mind-set of dependency, which is again a significant setback..the "solution" makes the problem worse than it was before.
The Land Reform of redistribution of farms (not to the liking of landowners) to the farmers was an attempt to help them move out poverty, but the problem was some of them didn't change their habits..some later sold others mortgage those farms. In the end, the change of ownership is from: Old Landowners to the Newer Landowners..only a few farmers benefitted. The critique of: The Indolence of the Filipinos still rings true.
Many a family fights over inheritances..brothers against brothers, sisters against sisters, all waiting for Give-Aways. Expats from abroad buying properties in the Philippines from their meager earnings: beware of who you would assign among your relatives who volunteered to act as caretakers.. Some well wishers... Does not wish You Well.

Why not prevent those politicians to be on the entertainment industry. Its a conflict of interest. They were elected to serve people not to entertain people. They are public figures and they need to be professional in all means and at all times. They should be focus in serving the public because their salary came from taxes of million of Filipinos. Its not the issue if they are already rich , its a matter on what they can do to our country. If he thinks that he is not capable of his position being congressman, then let go the position and be a full time entertainer or athlete. Atleast he would excel on that field instead of showing how incompetent he is in congress.

ARROYO,SINGSON,ATIENZA
    • Destiny  •  10 months ago
Anong excited si Pacquiao to share his blessings e wala naman siyang ginastos at gagastusin sa show nya.

    • mnm  •  10 months ago
yes, i agree manny paquiao is sending the wrong message. further, he is a copycat- he is doing as willie revillame is doing and worse!
manny many prizes should be scrapped! pronto! because it promotes instant gratification.

gma7 and manny pacquiao should come up with a show that rewards industry, hard work, honesty, perseverance, etc.- all the good values that are now lacking in our very materialistic society.

the people behind the show could be more creative. their games/contests must be original with focus on nation-building, such as creating livelihood opportunities, raising awareness regarding proper household waste management!
