    ‘Destination Entertainment’

'Project Runway Philippines' mentors Rajo Laurel, Apples Aberin, Jojie Lloren and host Tweetie de Leon. (Solar TV photo)Solar Entertainment billed "Destination Entertainment" as a thanksgiving party for the press held at the plush Genting Club at Resorts World (RW). Like most Solar affairs, this one had many things going for it—good food catered by Resorts World, a live band,  raffle prizes and the presence of the company's chief operating officer Peter Chan Liong. Unfortunately, the press was unable to interview him.

Instead, we had a group interview with Patti Grandidge and Kim Jones, hosts of locally produced magazine show "Etcetera" on etc, about fashion trends, beauty tips, the World Wide Web and related topics. We also sat down with "Project Runway Philippines" (PRP) host Tweetie de Leon and mentor Jojie Lloren.

I wanted to find out more about the 13 contestants who made it to the reality show which premieres on etc in March. The show conducted auditions in August and September last year in Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Baguio and Makati. Other than saying over a hundred aspirants showed up nationwide and that 50 percent came from Metro Manila and 50 percent from the provinces, Jojie remained evasive about other details. He kept referring to Edel Anne Pepito, Solar's vice president for Network Operations if he could give us more information but Edel politely said no. I guess we just have to wait till March to find out more about "PRP.". The show has Rajo Laurel and Apples Aberin as judges and they are joined by a guest judge each week.

We had more luck with Patty and Kim, whom we first interviewed in October last year. Just like the last time, they were game when I threw "silly" questions at them. Asked which of their five senses they would keep if they had to give up four, they both chose their sense of sight. Kim said she loved art and so she didn't mind losing her other senses as long she could enjoy looking at works of art. Patti would miss seeing the wonders of the world without her eyes.

Both sport long hair and have no plans of cutting them short. They're happy with the color of their hair and frowned when I asked if they would ever dye their hair blonde or brunette. Like most people, they do dream when they're asleep though Patti forgets details of her dream. Kim confessed she gets nightmares when she eats cheese.

Then out of the blue, I asked "what do you thing is the meaning of life?" To my surprise, the question did not intimidate them. Patti's answer: "We are meant to enjoy ourselves. Life is too short." Kim's reply: "To love and be loved."

    Solar's new shows for 2012

As the evening wore on, Solar presented its new shows for 2012. From GMA, "American Idol" is moving over to ETC starting Jan. 19, airing via satellite at 6 p.m. with a primetime replay at 9 p.m. Judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest are returning to Season 11 of the singing contest. On Feb. 29, "AI" will mark a milestone as it airs its 400th episode. On this day, the first group of semifinalists will perform live for the first time.

A much-hyped show produced by the multi-awarded Steven Spielberg will premiere on Feb. 9 at 9 pm. on Diva Universal and 2nd Avenue. "Smash" centers around the creative process surrounding the production of a fictional Broadway musical on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Thanks to the success of "Glee," TV producers are taking a chance on musical dramas. In the cast are Debra Messing who last appeared in "Will and Grace," Katharine McPhee, 2006 American Idol runner-up and Anjelica Huston, veteran actress. Unlike "Glee," "Smash" contains many original songs composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the duo responsible for the Broadway and movie hit "Hairspray."

Another Spielberg production is "Terra Nova" which is now airing on Jack TV. It's a sci-fi drama about the human race trying to survive by creating a new world in the past. Also widely anticipated on Jack is the return of "24" star Kiefer Sutherland in "Touch." He plays the father of a boy with unusual powers. This series is from the creator of "Heroes," Tim Kring.

These are just a few of the entertainment shows that will be aired on Solar's etc, 2nd Avenue, Jack TV, Universal and Diva Universal this year.
