Famous beauty queen quotes

With the Bb. Pilipinas coronation night only a few weeks away, beauty pageant watchers are at it again: giving contestants the once-over and asking friends and family to join them as they find out who will represent the country in the next round of international beauty tilts.

It' s a great time as any to recall famous beauty queen lines that did the rounds of social media, or — or in its absence years back — beauty salons, the coffee shops, even school campuses.

Let's take a trip down beauty pageant memory lane.

Gloria Diaz

Remember back in 1969? America conquered the moon (thanks to Neil Armstrong), but the Philippines conquered the universe.

Gloria Diaz brought home the country's first Miss Universe crown with her witty reply to host Bob Barker's question: If a man on the moon would come down, how would you entertain him?

Gloria's winning quote:

"I guess since he has been in the moon so long he would enjoy anything that an ordinary man would."

Melanie Marquez

1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez may have not given a grammatically correct answer to the question posed at her, but the judges didn't mind. It was her confidence and spunk that they noticed. So they gave her the crown at the end of the day.

Melanie didn't bat a pretty eyelash when faced with the question: "What part of your body would you like to change?"

Her now historic reply: "I won't change my legs because I'm contented with my long-legged."

Charlene Gonzales

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1994 Charlene Gonzales impressed judges and audience alike when she answered a question with another question on stage.

When asked, "How many islands are there in the Philippines?", the unruffled Charlene shot back: "High tide or low tide?

After the host replied, "Both," the poised Charlene ticked off statistics: "Well, on high tide, we have 7, 107, and on low tide we have 7, 108."

She emerged one of the Top 6 finalists in the 1994 pageant held at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Janina San Miguel

No other answer has been quoted and re-quoted, no other video has been viewed over and over, as much as Janina's was years back, when she went on stage for the traditional question-and-answer portion as a Bb. Pilipinas bet in 2008 (she won the crown but resigned months later due to personal reasons).

Janina's controversial answer to judge Vivienne Tan's question about what role her family plays in her pursuit of the crown:

"Well, my family's role for me is so important b'coz there was the wa- they're, they was the one who's... very... Hahahaha... Oh I'm so sorry, Ahhmm... My pamily... My family... Oh my god... I'm...
(Paolo Bediones: Pwede ka magtagalog,ok lang) Ok, I'm so sorry... I... I told you that I'm so confident... Eto, Ahhmm, Wait... Hahahaha, Ahmmm, Sorry guys because this was really my first pageant ever b'coz I'm only 17 years old and ahahaha I, I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of the taf 10. Hmmm, so... but I said dot my family is the most important persons in my life. Thank you."

Venus Raj

2010 Bb. Pilipinas-Miss Universe was a strong crowd favorite come pageant night in Las Vegas until she answered the question: "What is one big mistake you've made and what did you do to make it right?"

The flustered Venus replied, "You know what, sir? In my 22 years of existence, I can say there is nothing major, major, I mean, problem that I have done in my life.'"

She emerged fourth runner-up.
