Scotty wins ‘AI’ title over Lauren: How they fared

Early favorite Scotty McCreery, the 17-year-old country crooner from Garner, North Carolina, was crowned this year's "American Idol."

Scotty got more votes than the 16-year-old "Southern Belle" Lauren Alaina, from Rossville, Georgia. The contest between the two country singer aspirants got more than 122 million votes, "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest said during the show.

The "American Idol" two-hour finale featured performances by Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Tony Bennett. Judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler also took the stage. U2's Bono and the Edge, along with Reeve Carney, performed songs from the Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark."

The show's top 13 contestants also performed Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

The male crooner's win came after he took a beating from the judges during Tuesday's performance night (Wednesday morning in the Philippines). Lauren received a resounding rave from the judges Tyler, Lopez, and Randy Jackson last night. Lopez even said Lauren "may have just won the competition" with her performance of "Like My Mother Does," which would have been her debut singer had she won the competition.

Jackson, meanwhile, said he's not sure Scotty's "Love You This Big" is the perfect song for him although he added that his vocals during the performance was brilliant.

In two out of three rounds yesterday, judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson picked Lauren over Scotty. Judge Steven Tyler gave all three rounds to Lauren.

But despite the judges choosing Lauren over the eventual winner, Scotty's triumph wasn't much of a surprise. Besides being an early favorite in the competition, Scotty has never been among the bottom three vote-getters throughout the show.

Scotty is also show's fourth male contestant in a row to win the show, after season seven's David Cook, season eight's Kris Allen, and season nine's Lee Dywyze. The last female to win the title of "American Idol" Was Jordin Sparks, back in season six.

Obviously heading towards the country route, Scotty has huge shoes to fill. Season four winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood remains to be one of the show's two most successful contestants. Although not as popular internationally as Carrie and season one winner Kelly Clarkson, former "Idol" contestants Bucky Covington and Kellie Pickler have gained considerable success in the country genre and, at one point, are among the top 20 best selling "American Idol" alumni.

Scotty's commercial success after the show will prove whether or not the "Idol" still has commercial relevance in the music scene. Lee Dewyze's debut album, "Live It Up," is the lowest selling debut album from an "American Idol" winner. The album debuted at number 19 in the Billboard 200 charts, the first time an "Idol" winner's debut album did not even reach the top 10.

Scotty wins a recording contract from Universal Music Group's Interscope Records.
