    • Noel Cabangon, vice president of Dakila-Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism, wrote in his article for Abante that even if more Filipino films have been made recently, only a few are  "mapagpamulat sa mga Pilipino."

This is why Cabangon, fellow artist Lourd de Veyra, actor Ronnie Lazaro, Strange Brew's Tado Jimenez and Parokya ni Edgar's Buwi Meneses — Dakila co-founders all -- formed Active Vista in 2008.

      Films that transform

The human rights film festival aims to help aspiring filmmakers come up with films that transform lives.

This year, the festival begins with Hasik, a series of free filmmaking seminars for 50 participants.

"Ang Active Vista Film Festival ay nagpapalabas ng mga pelikula tungkol sa mga karapatang pantao. Ang Hasik naman ay naglalayon na magsanay ng mga nais maging filmmaker na naka-pokus sa iba't ibang adbokasiya tulad ng kapayapaan, kalusugan, edukasyon, kalikasan, malayang pagpapahayag at iba pa," Cabangon wrote.

    • The Asia Society Philippine Foundation Inc. (ASPFI), Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and Shangri-La Plaza present the first Asia-specific film festival in the country which promises to show compelling stories on the region's rich culture under the theme 'Asia as our Society.

Seventeen films from China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the Philippines will be screened at the Shang Cineplex Cinema 4 from May 17 to 21.

      Film to bridge international relations

ASPFI Executive Director Harvey Keh said at the press screening on May 3 that he hopes the festival will give Filipinos a better understanding of its Asian neighbors with whom it shares many cultural similarities.

"I believe film can be used not only to educate but to unite, and hopefully create bonds of cooperation towards peace and development in this region," he adds.

The film "Jakarta Maghrib" (Jakarta Twilight) was screened for  members of the media that day. And no, it's not about teenage

    • Cast member Rhian Ramos poses for photographers at the North American premiere of the Filipino film "The Road" …Yam Laranas' thriller "The Road" will be shown in over 50 cinemas in the US starting Friday, May 11. The development is a feat in itself since Pinoy films rarely get attention, much less commercial distribution in the US.

In a press conference announcing the film's US distribution, Annette Gozon-Abrogar, president of GMA Films claimed that this is a first for the country.

"As far as we know, this is the first Filipino film to be commercially distributed in the United States," she said.

It will be recalled that in the late '70s, Kidlat Tahimik's 1977 film (his first) "Perfumed Nightmare" was released in the US by no less than Francis Ford Coppola via his Studio Zeotrope, through the efforts of German film director, and Kidlat's contact and friend, Werner Herzog.

But this most recent feat for the Philippines got the coveted attention of the New York Time, which published two stories about it,

On May 8, NY Times writer Floyd Whaley described the film as lacking the "melodrama, simplistic

    • Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago (NPPA Images)After rumors of her troubled showbiz and acting career, Claudine Barretto proved to be  a "blockbuster hit" again with the uploaded video on YouTube  of her, husband Raymart Santiago and company ganging up on broadcast journalist Mon Tulfo at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Sunday, May 6.

Millions have seen the video since it was uploaded last Sunday night, May 6. Claudine in the video is in action - a fighter  looking for an opening and then punching the manhandled Tulfo when the opportunity arose.

It wasn't though the kind of "blockbuster hit" Claudine would have wanted to bury speculations that her acting career was sinking or has sunk already. Then, too, the said YouTube video, accordiing to Raymart, did not show the truth about the incident.

      Just the 'end story'

During Raymart and Claudine's press conference at Red Garlic Bistro last May 7, the actor explained that the  video was just the "end story" of what really transpired.

"Mga two meters ako, nilapitan ko

    • How the scuffle went (YouTube)

      Isn't it ironic?

The very thing that Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago said they wanted to prevent from happening did—with far worse results.

On Sunday, May 6, Santiago scuffled and engaged in a fistfight with muckraker Mon Tulfo at the airport to prevent the latter from using his camera phone to record an incensed Barretto berating an airline ground crew over missing luggage. The couple had just flown in from Boracay and Barretto had been informed that her luggage had been left behind.

Raymart had wanted to confiscate the phone from Tulfo and prevent whatever was taken from being viewed by the public.

But now, uglier images of them have emerged.

      On YouTube, no less.

      'Vicious headlock'

The actual video of the incident was uploaded to YouTube at exactly midnight of May 7, twelve hours since the incident occurred at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City. The 59-second clip showed how punches were thrown with a hapless Tulfo trapped

    • Jessica Sanchez (Publicity photo, American Idol)

Jessica Sanchez may be revealing some chink in her armor with some issues regarding song choice and performance, but her unquestionable sheer talent will definitely prevail.

That was clearly evident on Wednesday's performance night determining who will end up the Top 6.

Performing Alicia Keys's "Fallin'" and later Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," it was definitely obvious that she was not about to fall out of the competition. A week after she nearly said goodbye, this is now a Jessica who really wants to be the next American Idol.

And, she did not want to fail her three "biggest fans" of the moment, the three AI judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez who all used their lone save option to keep her in the running. As Randy pleaded to vote for talent and Jennifer appeal to stop the madness when Jessica had been voted off, it showed their efforts did not go for naught as we saw a different Jessica this week.

With her powerful, soulful and riveting

    • Cristine Reyes (Voltaire Domingo, NPPA Images) and Ara Mina (Marlo Cueto, NPPA Images)

A court case has been filed by Ara Mina against sister Cristine Reyes for grave coercion and libel over humiliating and threatening text messages the elder sibling received over an alleged unpaid debt.

While the charges seem valid, with the hateful and uncouth words that sprang up on those messages, the manner it is presented to the public shows more of how Ara is particularly on the offensive end.

With such celebrities begging for privacy on such matters, it is a bit surprising that Ara had all the willingness to openly present all these messages in her intention to prove why she is filing the case that would teach her sister a "lesson."

I find it uncomfortable and distressing to read these messages at the very least and while Cristine can be taken to task for sending those, it would be best not to open up the evidence to the public and instead present it before the courts, if she really intends to seek justice.

It is a brazen attack more on Cristine, since those messages were

    • Nora Aunor (NPPA Images)

Nora Aunor has reached her prime, leaving everyone in awe of her sheer talent and charisma. Despite her diminutive frame, the Superstar rose and became bigger than the industry itself—at one time taking one acting recognition after another for her movies and becoming a the top-rating TV personality with her weekly variety show. She also dominated the music recording during the early years of her career, accomplishing the "platinum" status by today's parlance.

She even became a cultural icon, one who aptly represents the victory of the masses in her own celebrity; closely identifying with the everyday man and woman. She rose from obscurity to the biggest star in the country without the help of a studio or network to build her up.

Who could forget her portrayal in CNN's top Asian film of all time, "Himala," which earned her awards both in local and international stages? Above all, this film placed her in an enviable position of being on the proverbial cultural timeline of the

    • Vice Ganda (NPPA Images)

Who would think Vice Ganda will go this far?

For long-time industry observers or entertainment journalists, Vice Ganda's rise to stardom was not unexpected at all.  From his beginnings as bit player in movies and TV shows and an unknown stand-up comedian in bars, he knew how to seize the day. That is, making the most of each second in the limelight to really show his wares as a comic.

His hard work paid off. After his inclusion on the talent show "Showtime," Vice Ganda's phenomenal success followed, with  words spewing from his mouth becoming the toast of pop lingo. He since landed a late-night show, "Gandang Gabi Vice," which is a la Letterman and Leno, and based on his irreverent hosting style.

What's more phenomenal about Vice is his box-office success. Figures show that his "Unkaboggable Praybeyt Benjamin" rewrote film history in just a few months as the biggest-earning movie of all time, besting "Showtime" co-host Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes' "No

    • Derek Ramsay (Mike Alquinto, NPPA Images)

Derek Ramsay has gone bolder than ever before, with his career, that is.

In fact, the sportsman that he is makes him take an unchartered leap—from his success in the Kapamilya network to yet another adventure in his career, this time in the Kapatid network.

Two days into the Easter season, Derek formally signed up with TV5 as its latest recruit, albeit the latest A-List departure from ABS-CBN.

A week ago, he confirmed he was not renewing his contract with ABS-CBN but made clarifications on an official press release from the Kapamilya network that he had chosen to leave because the TV5 offer was something he could not refuse.

His leaving ABS-CBN was not about money, he says. It was about doing something he really wanted to do.

Let's also consider, however, that, despite his insane box-office triumphs in two of the highest earning movies of all time—"No Other Woman" and "The Unkaboggable Praybeyt Benjamin"—he had been on the back burner on the TV landscape, with his
