    Onew. Jonghyun. Key. Minho. Taemin.

Just mention their names and hearts of female K-Pop fans from 13 to 40 (and I mean, 40!) start fluttering. What is it about this K-pop idol group that makes young girls go crazy and mature women forget their poise and decorum?

SHINee (pronouced "shiny") is a 5-member K-Pop idol group recently given the title "The Beatles of Asia".  SHINee is managed by SM Entertainment, the same company behind K-Pop stars like Girl's Generation and Super Junior. Composed of leader-vocalist Onew (21), vocalist Jonghyun (21), rapper-vocalist Key (19), rapper-flaming charisma Minho (19), and maknae-dancer Taemin (17), SHINee debuted in the K-Pop scene back in 2008.

In just a little more than 3 years, SHINee has conquered the hearts of not just Korean fans but fans from all over the world. The group has performed in Asia, the United States, China, and Europe and in each place they visit, shawols (SHINee's fans) welcome and support them wholeheartedly. How wholehearted? Well, there are reports and videos of European shawols crying out of excitement and happiness during SHINee's Paris performance as part of the SMTown world tour. If that's not wholehearted, what is? The boys are currently continuing their quest to capture more female hearts as they tour Japan (Hyperlink: http://ph.omg.yahoo.com/blogs/okpop/shinee-breaks-records-japanese-debut-044452451.html.

What is it about this young idol group that makes fans go crazy? Let me give you three reasons why SHINee is just….too much!

    Too talented to ignore

SHINee in their debut photo (Sports Korea)SHINee in their debut photo (Sports Korea)When SHINee debuted in the K-Pop scene in 2008, they were considered one of the youngest acts to debut. At that time, the group's average age was 17. Their youth did not hinder them from success. The quality of their performances, which resulted from years of training, impressed the Korean public. Their debut song  "Noona Nemu Yepppeo (Replay)" captured the hearts of older fans with its lyrics but also won hearts of younger fans. SHINee's live performances highlighted creative dance moves and impeccable vocals.

The members' talents do not stop with singing and dancing, though. Onew has performed on the Korean version of the musical "Rock of Ages" aside from having a reputation for being a good MC and lyricist. Jonghyun is known for his amazing vocals and songwriting talent having penned the group's title track "Juliette" for their second mini-album "Romeo" and other tracks in their recent album "Lucifer". Key is considered one of the most fashion-forward K-Pop idols and has a knack for learning languages which prove indispensable in SHINee's quest for worldwide recognition. Minho excels in athletic skills and has dabbled in several acting and modeling projects. Taemin, arguably the most popular member of the group, is considered one of the top dancers in the K-Pop industry.

Musically, SHINee is quite a versatile group. Although they started their career singing pop songs, the group has also released tracks in the R&B, electronica and dance genre. Onew recently showed his ability to sing opera by performing "Nessun Dorma" from Puccini's Turandot.

The accolades won by SHINee is also a testament to their talent. The group has won numerous awards including several best newcomer awards, Golden Disks awards, and popularity awards.

    Too cute to resist

In 2008, their year they debuted, the SHINee boys had a reality TV show entitled "SHINee's YunHaNam". This show sealed the deal for many of their forever-loyal fans. Each episode showed the boys trying their best to impress an older woman. She, then, chooses one member to go on a date with. Imagine…being on a fantasy date with your favorite idol member?! Come on!

Those who saw "SHINee's YunHaNam" cannot deny that the boys' cuteness factor was irresistable. The brilliance of the show is how it highlighted the fact that they were young men trying to seem sophisticated to impress a girl. What a great backdrop for amusing awkwardness and surprising quips and situations. That's good entertainment.

The cuteness explosion did not stop there, though. In 2010, the SHINee boys also starred in another reality show entitled "Hello Baby" where they were tasked to be the father of an adorable 4-year old boy. Imagine a bunch of young boys trying to take care of an energetic and spunky child! As expected, hilarity ensued as Onew and Jonghyun, the older members naturally expected to be the most responsible ended up goofing around while the younger members Key, Minho and Taemin showed their fatherly sides.

    Too hot to handle

For this particular point, I don't need to write anything. Just look at these photos (and maybe click the video) and you'll know what I mean.

It was the Japanese media that dubbed them as the 'Beatles of Asia' since they performed at Abbey Road, so don't give the writer so much hate.

Also, as a fan, I feel quite disheartened by the rude comments directed towards SHINee. Sure they may not suit your tastes, but I don't see the point of directing insults toward them on a personal level.

For people saying that it's pointless listening to music you don't understand, what about those who really like Utada Hikaru's First Love? I don't think you need to know the language beforehand to like a song, the melody and emotion projected by the artist is enough.

      @Pinoyrocks:
"YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA AT ALL OR WHATSOEVER ON THE KIND OF TALENT THAT THE BEATLES SHOWED THE WORLD TO EVEN TRY TO COMPARE THEM WITH THIS K-POP GROUP."

Sure, the Beatles were rock legends, but it seems that your point is the Beatles were so godly these guys seem talentless.

They're in different genres. SHINee is a contemporary R&B boyband who specialize in sing and dance, whilst the Beatles are a rock band. It's like comparing an apple to an orange.

"YOU CALL THIS KIND OF SINGING AND DANCING (OF THE SHINEE) A TALENT? THEN YOU MUST HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN A REAL TALENT IN YOUR LIFETIME YET."

excuse me sir, I love watching dance groups from all over the world. I'm a fan of ABDC and I've seen a lot of really great dancers, and for a K-pop group, SHINee is one heck of a dance group. You can't base their talent on dancing just on this one video the writer posted. You haven't seen enough yet. They can also sing and dance live, I suggest you do your research before directing baseless insults towards them.

"ALSO, THE NAME SHINEE OR THE TERM CUTE ARE..WELL, EXCUSE ME, BUT IF YOU ARE A REAL MAN...ACT LIKE A MAN...DANCE AND SING LIKE A MAN..DO NOT SQUEAL AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, THERE IS A REASON WHY THERE ARE DIFFERENT CATALOGS FOR MEN'S HAIRCUT AND THAT OF THE WOMEN'S. ARE THEY ALL TRYING TO MAKE US THINK THAT THEY ARE A GIRL GROUP OR WHAT?"

That's your own opinion. The hairstyles sported in the Philippines and other countries vary by culture. In Korea, SHINee is considered a fashion icon. Also, the Philippines is very much behind in fashion trends, so I suppose saying that they're sporting girlish hairstyles demonstrate your ignorance on the latest trends in the fashion industry.

On a side note, I noticed that it was mostly men who wrote really rude comments. Insecure much? :)

you said it yourself, they're in different genres. that's why many people are reacting and some are actually offended. marami atang rakista dito.

i for one, don't agree that they should be dubbed as the beatles of asia. i know, they did not chose this moniker and i have nothing against them, i just think the beatles are way better musicians and have stood the test of time.
      • sybil 10 months ago
I can understand that you guys are heavily offended by that, and I don't agree myself. I think the Japanese media just said that based on their apparent popularity outside of S.Korea plus the fact that they performed in the same place. Otherwise, SHINee is nothing like the Beatles.

If somebody told me XLR8 or some local P-Pop spawn was dubbed as the Pinoy SHINee or what have you, sure I would be offended. I'd be totally pissed off at the writer or whoever thought of that statement. But I wouldn't insult the guys themselves. That's like, insulting somebody on a personal level. The guys didn't ask for the title themselves. I wouldn't dare cuss at them--unless XLR8 said so themselves that they were the Pinoy SHINee.

Go ahead and blame the Japanese media for giving them that title that irks so many. Just don't make SHINee seem like they lack talent. That's an irresponsible, unresearched comment and a very offensive insult and that's just taking it way too far.

Mga ILANG PILIPINO talaga MAHIRAP MAKAINTINDI NG SIMPLENG BAGAY NOH?! parang si DEATH TO KPOP lang! Title lang yung binigay HINDI PA YUN OFFICIAL TITLE TALAGANG BINIGAY NG MUNDO SA KANILA!! NAIINTINDIHAN NYO BA MGA HATERS?? TITLE LANG.. HINDI ITO COMPETITION NG LAHAT NG ARTISTS/BOY BANDS/GIRL BANDS SA ASIA O KAHIT SA BUONG MUNDO!!

ITATAK NYO NGA SA MGA UTAK NYO!
    • Kashii  •  10 months ago
They will not be called as "BEATLES OF ASIA" if they didn`t make a great history in KOREAN POP INDUSTRY. Use your common sense guys.. I mean FILIPINOs. Yes, I am a Filipino Shawol but I am really SURPRISED that WE FILIPINOs don`t have "RESPECT" for other people. You even don`t know SHINee yet you are the one who have more to say. SHUT UP YOUR UNRULY MOUTHS! Sorry if I sounds too harsh but I`m really dissapointed with us, FILIPINOs..

In fact, SHINees Debut SINGLE Sells 90K & Makes New Oricon Record! =))
      SHINee is the BEST!!!
      • michi kim 10 months ago
shinee made a great history in korean pop industry, FACT. agreed.
then why not tagged them as BEATLES OF KOREA?!?!
don't get me wrong, i like shinee and is also a kpop fan
but "BEATLES OF ASIA" is not really appropriate.
      • Death To kpop 10 months ago

at ikaw paulo tan, kilala mo ba ang beatles? gamitin mo muna utak mo. isipin mo nang mabuti. i googled shinee and watched a couple of their vids on youtube para ma justify ko ang statements ko. di ba R&B ang genre ng music nila? rock n'' roll and beatles. tapos they were formed by some entertainment company where as the beatles were composed of like minded individuals na mahilig sa music at gustong gumawa ng magandang music. sa vids nila, sumasayaw-sayaw pa nga sila eh, at may pa rap rap pa... sila ba ang sumusulat ng sarili nilang kanta?

        it's apples and oranges, really

and it's not about being filipino. i'm sure magagalit din ang mga british pag narinig nila ito. kahit na fans ng beatles sa ibang bansa will also get offended.
      • Kashii 10 months ago
Ikaw, DEATH TO KPOP (talaga lang?!) "SIMILARITIES"... itatak!
    • impinoythisway!  •  10 months ago
why are you guys making such a big deal out this? just because they we're called the "the beatles of asia?" common guys, they were called "the beatles of asia" because they deserved it.. they worked hard really hard and has their own originality.. you should know how to respect them as much as you guys wanted to be respected.. they didn't ask for this, you can call "title" or whatever,.. so stop judging ... and stop comparing them to other groups..
      • impinoythisway! 10 months ago
okay. he has some good points i admit, and i couldn't answer quite a few questions because i wasnt the one who gave them that "name" ( The Beatles of Asia).. my point is no matter how much they hate the fact that they were given that name and not some other groups they want, or because they love the beatles so much ,, it's not enough reason fo them to start talking @#$% about shinee. they dont deserve being judged that way,, neither any of you guys... all groups/bands/singer etc has their own talent.. it's never shinee's fault okei? and would think it's right for people to just start saying harsh words? like gay and stuff? i dont think so...

"you just stooped down to the level of some the haters here by threatening to call the beatles gay. " HOW?
      • Death To kpop 10 months ago
yun nga ang ikinagagalit ng marami sa amin. they don't deserve to be called the beatles of asia. sure, they worked hard but does that make them comparable to the beatles? meron dito show band sa amin, 10 years na sila as a group. magaling sila kaya lang mahirap sa mga taga probinsya ang makapasok sa music industry, especially kung wala kang backer... shoudn't they be also called the beatles of asia?

again, kahit na kung sino pang media ang bumansag sa kanila ng ganyan, they should never be compared to the beatles!
      • impinoythisway! 10 months ago
"palibhasa kasi, hindi mo masyado kilala ang beatles. hindi mo maiintidihan ang feeling ng mga tunay na fans na naooffend."

let me tell you the same thing.. you guys don't know that much about shinee neither do i.. you guys dont know na marami na rin kaung naoofend due sa mga b.s na binabato nio sa Shinee.. what would you feel if they call the Beatles GAY, ? i bet you'd be hurt the way Shawols did. :/ if you guys dont wanna support this group it's really best if you start shuttin up.. sorry but you guys are really crossing the line!!!!!

woah! woah! guys! hold on a minute! ang gulo-gulo!
what's so wrong with posting a KPop news here?! surely SHINee would not be called "Beatles of Asia" for nothing! they're a great KPop Boy band! isa pa, even if we Filipino Shawols can't understand what they're singing about, the beat, rhythm and everything else about their music is exactly enough to impress us and make us love them more!
grabe nman yung iba jan! ipinagpipilitan na dapat hindi i-appreciate ang mga Koreans just because they don't appreciate us and as some people said they hate us and they look down on us! eh kung tutuusin most of you are doing the exact things you say they are doing to us! and even worse!
respeto lang mga Pinoy. . hindi magandang trip ang manglait. .

    • Rica  •  10 months ago
Why are people so harsh? If you guys don't like SHINee, then fine. But please.. PLEASE.. don't bash them. If you don't have something nice to say, then just don't say anything. The top comments are really heartbreaking.

You don't agree that they're like The Beatles? That's also fine. I, as a Shawol, don't agree with it as well. I believe that they have their own character as a boygroup. They're contemporary, modern and unique in their own ways.

As a fan, I obviously doesn't want my favorite group receiving such inappropriate comments. It breaks my heart. That's the reason why I don't bash or say anything harsh to other artists. I just hope other fans or readers share the same standpoint as mine.

the question that is asked below is Are you a Shawol? if you're not a shawol then go away. its not as if SHINee made themselves the Beatles of Asia, its just the media. sooo don't bash them and call them gay. Look at urselves first, maybe ur the one whos gay/lesbian watsoever :P
That article right there....................... I agree because I AM A SHAWOL!!!!!!!!!! ;)

i don't want to sound so offended, but, @#$% this. the beatles were and are music gods. there are very few that can even be compared to be below one level of them. this is the most pretentious article i have ever read.

i demand that yahoo philippines do some quality checks and not let stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid people write articles.

i have nothing against kpop. in fact, i am a fan. but we all know and they all know that they are just making cheeky music and not the type that would be remembered for generations. they are merely manufactured dolls that sing and dance and get the occasional plastic surgery. yes, shinee fans, i know that taemin had a nose lift.

on another note, if they can be considered asia's beatles, how about boy bands bigger than them? super junior? 2pm? or solo acts like rain?

stupid marketing is not only sacrilegious, it is plain idiotic.

      fire the writer, yahoo.
    • Christian Cortes  •  10 months ago

Look at the Filipino Music Industry. When it comes to the singers you'll hear remake, revival, remix, re.. re.. re.. No originality.
I mean, don't get me wrong. There are SOME who really have the talent and has his or her own sense of style and individuality but many are still doing the same thing over and over again.
Have we seen singers (can we even call them singers?) copy the style of K-Pop group? Yes.
      Are they encouraged? Yes.
Singers even lip-sync during their own live performance. I mean, how dumb is that?
A singer who cannot sing. Funny and irritating at the same time.
Don't blame the Filipinos for looking for some originality and vibrant talents if they can't find it in their own industry.
Eraserheads? They're good, really. They're legends but did they even make other country listen to their songs?
Why do you think the K-Pop sensation is reaching all over the world?
Because many can see the originality, individuality, versatility and even discipline of the performers.
Copying just a teeny tiny bit of a dance is plagiarism to them.
But in the Philippines: Just go ahead and copy everything.
